The Final Wednesday Zoom!

Today was our last Weekly Wednesday Zoom meeting - after a whole year of weekly Wednesday zooms together! We missed only one week - so I reckon we should have a place in the records for our dogged determination, through thick and thin!

We dressed for the occasion, in smart frocks and posh hats, had polite conversation, a fabulous quiz from
Mary Williams
and a Generation Game style memory game, complete with cuddly toy!
I did take a screen shot, but no-one came out looking good! I must have taken it when we were all trying to get one of the quiz answers! So, you will have to imagine us all in our finery, having a good laugh at something!
Here are some gorgeous tulips instead, from Barbara L’ garden and from my garden!

Job Vacancy, anyone?

I saw this on another group and just had to copy and paste!

Flashbak
‘Hefty Girls Wanted For Police Force - They Must be Hefty’ - c. 1935 - 1945

There are plenty of us who love where we live and, without making any social or political statement about it, choose to look after our own neighbourhood. Let’s continue to pick up litter when we see it and keep Devon beautiful.

Devon WI
Clean Devon Partnership have created a campaign which aims to protect our environment for wildlife, residents, businesses and visitors helping to prevent, detect and deter littering in Devon.
Keep an eye out for their ‘find a bin or take it home’ campaign which is expected to run over the next few months. Devon Federation ERA committee is supporting this initiative.

Oats Healthfood Store in Fore Street, Brixham

Hi Folks
We are starting a collection point for these. Inside/outside Oats shop on Tuesday as it appears Torquay is the nearest Superdrug to take them. This is great news, so many packets like these get chucked and st Oats we purposely avoid stocking many supplements that come like this!
Soroptimist International
We are collecting empty tablet strip packs and taking them to Superdrug. Superdrug are working in conjunction with TerraCycle who will convert the packaging into reusable raw materials using its unique recycling process – preventing empty packs spending a lifetime in landfill. What’s more, Superdrug are supporting Marie Curie as each empty blister packet that gets recycled as part of the ‘Little Packs, Big Impact’ scheme. It's easy - it's free and it's a double whammy - recycling and supporting a fantastic charity too. Can you help? Please start saving yours. It really is amazing as to how they add up very quickly.

If five million people
You can recycle aluminium foil but you can only do that if there is enough for the recycling processing machines to identify it and separate it.
So save your foil and when you've got a ball the size of a tennis ball or bigger, then put it in the recycling.

If all goes according to plan...

.....we hope to be able to go on our first walk together on Tuesday 30th at 10.30 meeting at the Man and Boy statue. As six people arrive, off they will go as we can only be in groups of six.

The only things which could prevent this are a) changes to the roadmap out of lockdown and b) if the rain is coming down in stair rods.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Easter rabbit, anyone?

Well, the instruction was ... rather inept? To put it kindly! It was fun and I think everyone managed to put a few folds into a piece of paper!  Margaret did a great quiz for us, thank you everyone for a spot of fun today!

This is what we were attempting to create:

Pauline Kidner gave a fascinating talk about the wildlife rescues and the care given to the creatures. Wow! We really need to stop leaving rubbish about!

Does anyone know the collective noun for pandas?

Mary C has been very busy lately, creating this perfection of pandas? A pride of pandas? The pink one must be the Princess Panda? A procrastination of pandas? Ideas on a postcard, please!

Zoom meeting today!

Jayne organised a great chocolate themed quiz for us today - so I did rather well! The second part on geography and history was less successful for me, but most taxing to the little grey cells and very enjoyable! Lots of people told us about their memorable days! What interesting experiences and places people have visited! Thank you all for your smiles and company!

March meeting - 2pm, Thursday 18th - zoom

We have booked a speaker, Pauline Kidner, from Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Highbridge! Through the magic of zoom we don’t have to pay any travel expenses, or book a venue! There are 20 places available, 4 of which are already taken! Pauline comes highly recommended, so you probably won’t want to miss out! Let me know soon if you wish to attend!

Can’t do zoom? Oh yes you can! Email me and we will work through it together!

Here is a link to their website if you would like a preview: https://www.secretworld.org/

A reminder!

Members who have a contact list: it is for your own use only! Please do not give anyone’s number to someone else without specific permission!

It is unacceptable to give out an individual’s number without their express permission, which is one of the reasons for us requiring everyone to sign the data protection paperwork.

We had some great holiday tales today! Wow! I think the general opinion is that holidays in the UK are fantastic! Thank you to Ann P for a taxing quiz! An excellent sociable quiz with lots of laughs and interesting chat! See you all again next week!

What a fantastic cover of @womensinstitute @WILifemagazine this month. We know we are holding on to hope, until we can get together again. And it will be worth the wait 💚💚💚 #wi #womensupportingwomen #womeninstitute

Resolution Selection Results 2020/21

The resolution selection results are in! This year there were 66,312 individual selections cast by WI members and the most popular resolution, which received 30,240 selections, was A call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer. The NFWI Board of Trustees has decided to put this resolution forward to the Annual Meeting in June.

The wording of the resolution is as follows:

A call to increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer

Every two hours in the UK someone dies of ovarian cancer. Making sure GPs and the public know what to look for will not only ensure the early detection and treatment of this disease but transform lives today and for generations to come. NFWI calls on WI members everywhere to help increase awareness of the subtle signs of ovarian cancer.

What happens next?

Members now have the opportunity to learn more about the issues, and to discuss the resolution in their WIs before deciding how their WI should vote following the Annual Meeting. The vote will not take place at the Annual Meeting itself this year.

The deadline for WIs to cast their vote is 9th July 2021.
