May Institute meeting

Our speaker showed some beautiful photos of his walk from the west to the east coast of England. Especially stunning were those he took of the Lake District. It was very interesting to hear how he spent two weeks with his son, walking through wind, sun and rain (plenty of the latter!).

There were many events to sign up for, and more, including some coach trips, to decide whether or not we are interested. And a picnic at Berry Head car park on Sunday 28th July - family, friends and dogs welcome to join in. There will be an email to all WI members with details. Lynn also gave information about our birthday party meeting next month, when the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Devon is coming to speak to us.

Loz read us a lovely Thought of the Month and Barbara won the flower competition with a stunning rose. All of the entries were really gorgeous!

At craft next week, 22nd May:

bring a 1lb jam jar (eat the jam first),

ribbon or string if you wish to adorn the outside

Flowers - home grown, home made, bought, borrowed…. And foliage of your choice

Oasis and £3 for the room hire.

Well done to Lynn on a very enjoyable and successful meeting!

Book Share this afternoon…

….. was very sociable and interesting. We decided that we have read, this past year, a number of books for the older reader. The consensus was that we would really enjoy more books from the popular fiction section!

Everyone enjoyed On Chesil Beach and felt it was a sad story, very well written, which caused us to remember very clearly our own experiences at that time of life.
Other titles enjoyed this month: ‘And Then She Was Gone’ by Linda Jewell. ‘The Cliff House’, by Chris Brookmyre, ‘An Ideal Husband’ by Erica James, ‘ Sheltering Rain’, Jojo Moyes, ‘Girl on the Landing’ by Paul Torday, a whole series by Annalou Weatherley, ‘Running Grave’ by Robert Galbraith. Marcia Willett, a local author, whose books are set on Dartmoor.
Highly recommended tv programmes: Cuckoo on Channel 5 and Red Eye on ITV.

Book Worms met yesterday:

… to talk about our book of the month, Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. Mixed reviews, enjoyed by some not gone on with by others with parts lost in translation. His book, A man called Ove was preferred.
Also discussed farming and conservation, hospital parking and more enjoyable sea swimming! Thank you to all for making it an enjoyable morning.
This months book is The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See.

Photo added for interest! It contains one Book Worm on a grand day out!
