It is official! We can go for walks again together! Who is in?

Is there anyone who would like to join me for a walk on Thursday 3rd December at 10.30?

We could meet at the Man and Boy statue, walk around the harbour and along the breakwater. Possibly ending up at the Breakwater Bistro for a takeaway hot drink!

The first five people to email me will be on the list! Let’s do it!

A busy afternoon!

Some practice of the techniques I learned in the Quirky Birds zoom, making a starry display.

I thought I would use up all the oddments of wool I had left.... it wasn’t enough, so various WI friends were kind enough to donate their odds and ends. Now I have enough to make another one!

Walking sixes! We can do this!

Quirky Bird watercolours by Lyn

The zoom workshop organised by Jackie Bufton of Dart Bay was excellent. For all skill levels - I am a complete beginner water colour person, and this is what I managed to do!

Carolyn, Mary W and Carol were there, too - maybe some others from Brixham WI? Can we see your pictures,  please?

Lots of you probably need these...

Some spectacular knitting...

By Barbara L, and, believe it or not, this is the second one she has knitted! Yes! When her daughter saw the first one she asked if she could have a coat just like it!

Fantastic!

Well, this is amazing! A beautiful and very useful item. Tina has been using her Grandmother’s needle case and it was in need of some repair.

Resolutions - shortlist for us to decide which we would like to support.

The 2020/21 resolution shortlist is now ready!
After receiving many brilliant resolutions from WIs, member delegates and federation representatives completed the hard work of narrowing them down to a shortlist at the October Resolution Shortlist Selection meeting. This shortlist is now ready and all members are invited to evaluate the list and submit their individual selections to their federations by 18th January.
The NFWI has prepared a range of resources on each shortlisted resolution which you can use to aid your decision. Members are encouraged to read the briefings, do their own research and engage critically with the resolutions before selecting the one they support the most. We would also encourage you to hold virtual meetings to discuss the resolutions in you WIs.
If you have any questions about returning your selection slip, please speak to your WI committee or your federation.
You can find your selection slip in the November/December issue of WI Life. In addition to completing the selection slip in WI Life and posting it to your federation, WI’s can:
- Allow members to submit their selections directly to the WI secretary via email or telephone
- Conduct an anonymous poll at a virtual WI meeting
- Collect selections using electronic tools, such as via email or using a survey tool like SurveyMonkey
For more information or to request a copy of the selection slip, please contact the NFWI at pa@nfwi.org.uk.

Today we zoomed!

Such a great zoom today, with lots of people, too! How lovely to see and chat with everyone! Next week.... bring a pen and paper for the quiz and a table napkin (paper or cloth) folded. Apparently a square or rectangle won’t be up to the mark! A swan, a crown.... who knows what will be presented! Thank you to Beryl for a most intriguing and very tricky quiz!

Denman at Home session

Here is my attempt, during the session by Stacy Chapman of Art Sea Craft Sea:

I have loads of ideas and techniques to keep me busy for a long time.....!

Later on, this afternoon! Surprising to see how the different light has altered the colour of the photos!

Lots of news and some great ideas from NFWI - some of us will be definitely keen on the final paragraph!

National Gallery supports the Not in my Name Campaign

27 November 2020, 7pm-8pm, £5 per ticket

Join Artist Luisa-Maria MacCormack of The Big Art Herstory Project to look at the reasons behind the victim-blaming romanticised, colonial and male-orientated approach of some of the most famous and troubling paintings every made.  Luisa-Maria will also consider interventions and activist projects by feminist artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, who have added their voice to an ongoing debate.  This event is brought exclusive to WI members through the WI/National Gallery partnership.

Design the Queen’s Birthday Card

Using calligraphy skills, WI members are invited to submit a piece of work, on behalf of the Women’s Institute, to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday.  Work can be presented in any Calligraphy style, using any form of writing instrument associated with the art of Calligraphy.  Members are invited to be as creative as they wish, using a single or various Calligraphy techniques, colours and ink.  (We have a document which contains details of guidelines and closing date, which members must follow when submitting their finished piece of work. Just ask me!)

Crafting with the Chelsea College of Arts

Are you passionate about art and design? Are you skilled in weave, print, knit, stitch or embroidery? Would you like to team up with some of the UKs most experimental textile designers to create work which brings together the craft, expertise and heritage of the WI with contemporary design?  Chelsea College of Arts, in partnership with the NFWI, are looking for skilled and forward-thinking craftswomen of the WI to take part in a project with BA Textile Design students, that will encourage skill-sharing, communication and creativity.

Elizabeth Bell Challenge 2021/2022

Running from January – December 2021, WIs are invited to compose a record demonstrating how their members have worked together to engage and support one-another throughout the year; offering opportunities that have united their members, as well as successfully marketing the WI to increase their membership.  All members of the WI are encouraged to take part and contribute; from organising activities, photography, managing and writing the record(s), to designing and formatting the final entry.  We want WIs to work together as a team and create a piece of work which proudly demonstrates the up’s and down’s of a year in the WI, as well a recognising the inspirational achievement made by all members that will go towards safeguarding another 100 years of the WI.

Walking Netball Activity Sessions Resume

Following the recent Government announcement, we are disappointed to confirm that community netball will be suspended with effect from Thursday 5th November.  Despite this news, we will continue to do all we can to ensure netball will #RiseAgain

In the meantime, we will still be running our weekly virtual WI WN activity sessions every Monday evening at 7.30pm and every Thursday morning at 10.30am.  These sessions are free to attend and are offered to all WI members (England, Wales and the Islands) regardless of whether or not you play Walking Netball, as an exclusive benefit through the NFWI/England Netball partnership.  So please do join us and bring your fellow members.  We will also be sharing a pre-recorded Walking Netball session once a month on My WI, so you can access a Walking Netball session when it is convenient for you.  Please contact nicole.flaherty@englandnetball.co.uk to register your interest and receive a link to attend a virtual session.

Such pretty colours! Wow! Just look at the accuracy! Very impressive.

Another great course from Denman at Home

Applique Poinsettia Napkins by Hand or Machine Stitch with Stacey: Tuesday 17 November at 1pm
Using the quintessential Christmas Plant as inspiration, we will create festive napkins using the same motif over two projects, one for beginners and the other for more advanced sewers.
In this course Stacey will demonstrate the basic technique of appliqué, basic freehand machine embroidery and using thread to draw with by hand. The aim of the course is for you to have the basic knowledge, inspiration and confidence of how to create your own poinsettia inspired project, in your own personal style, working at your own skill set.

The Kingswear Cup

Please send me your photos if so - remember it can be any medium, any craft or activity: baking, flower arranging, modern dance (video footage, please), knitting, embroidery, mosaic....

Here is Tina’s  ‘Through the Looking Glass’. Spectacular.

We had a great chat today about A Man Called Ove, and many other things, too!

Next month’s choice is Morality for beautiful girls by Alexander McCall Smith one of the First Ladies detective agency series set in Botswana

If you would like a second title, Ghost by Robert Harris was suggested.

We will meet again on zoom on Thursday 10th December at 2pm. All welcome! Just ask so that you can be invited to the zoom session!

Some pieces of homework already submitted!

Barbara set us some homework today! Well, we are staying at home as much as possible aren’t we?

Make a greetings card using a napkin! We listened to an excellent explanation of how to separate the layers of napkin, and use only the top layer. You could cut out the design with scissors, but to get a soft, more attractive edge to your chosen image, outline the picture or shape with a fine paintbrush dipped in water. (Don’t be too heavy handed with the water dipping, otherwise the whole napkin gets soaked and you can’t work with it! Speaking from my experience!). Then, carefully ease the picture away from the rest of the napkin, apply glue to it very gently and stick it on to your card! (The standard bull in a china  shop approach just isn’t right for this!)

This would make excellent gift tags, too!

Here are three of Barbara’s and my efforts! Also, Wendy has made a very good and original effort, using white napkins! And another one just in from Beryl! Update today, Thursday, from Tina! Fabulous!

What gorgeous napkins there are in cupboards!

More caring for yourself...

.....provided you can get up from the floor afterwards!

Today’s zoom!

We talked about filming,  culinary experiments, crafts.....all sorts of topics were covered today! Lots of laughs, too! Thank you, everyone! Welcome to Julie and Margaret! We have to make our version of Barbara’s lovely card for next week!

Happy Festive memories, Brixham WI!

Once again this year, I’ve had requests for my Vodka Christmas Cake recipe so here goes. Please keep in your files as I am beginning to get tired of typing this up every year! (Made mine this morning!!!!) 1 cup sugar, half pound butter, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 cup water, 1 tsp. salt , 1 cup brown sugar, Lemon juice, 4 large eggs, Nuts, 1 bottle Vodka, 2 cups dried fruit 4 cups self raising flour.
Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality then Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still OK. Try another cup just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver Sample the Vodka to test for tonsisticity. Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Check the Vodka. Now shit shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the fekin window. Finish of the Vodka and wipe the counter with the flipping cat.

nterested in trying something a bit different?

Dart Bay craft organisers have come up with a great idea:

We have had an idea though based on a popular lady on Facebook called Lynee of Quirky Birds. Lyn is doing fun sessions on Zoom - she is leading painting (watercolour) sessions with chat - she is lighthearted and anyone can do the painting if they have paper, pencil and paint. We have approached her and as she is so familiar already with WI she will happily do an event for us. She will however charge us and therefore we would need to ask for £5.00 per head (but if we got lots of people interested we could lower this) and we would need a minimum of 10 people to cover her costs.

Let me know right now if you are interested!
