Record of our Institute meeting 20th October

Brixham WI Meeting  20th October 2021

Our third meeting this year and the room was buzzing from the outset.  Its so good for us all to be able to meet again.

Sparks welcomed everyone and explained the fire exit procedure now agreed with the Rugby Club.  Members agreed to the training of two volunteers, Ann Parker and Sue England as first aiders.  The training and the purchase of a first aid kit will be paid for from branch funds and from the sale of some donated materials.

Treasurers Report

Tina reported the current balance and confirmed that we have now reached our limit of 60 members.  We also have a waiting list for new members wishing to join.  Tina has also sent our Gift Aid application to HMRC for processing.

Visitors

Ann explained that as we are now at full capacity, members wishing to bring visitors to the meeting are asked to let her know in advance.  Due to the lack of space in the meeting room, particularly at special meetings such as the Christmas Party, wdo need to limit numbers.

SecretaryReport

Wendy reminded members to look at the Whats On Folder, drawing attention to the offer on the Centenary Mugs and also the various competitions.

Guest Speaker

Graham Gordon from Devon Air Ambulance gave us a very entertaining talk on the amazing work of the DAA and gave some heart-warming and sometimes hair-raising examples of the rescues they’ve undertaken. He also encouraged everyone to download the What3Words app, which enables any of the emergency services to pinpoint any location.

At Gordon’s  request, we sang Jerusalem before he left us so that he could join in with his rather splendid tenor voice.

Other Business

Raffle prizes were won by Lynn, Gail, Julie, Barbara and Ann and Annie’s chosen Thought for the Month was a quote from Gertrude Jekyll:

The love of gardening is a seed that once sown never dies but grows to the enduring happiness that the love of gardening gives

This was shown to be true by the fourteen lovely entries in the flower competition which was won this month by Jill Daw, with Yvonne Lovell and Sheila Parissien in second and third places.

The logo competition was won by Ann Parker with her circle of hands design.

Barbara L. gave the list of things to bring to craft group next Wednesday and everyone agreed that it would be good to reinstate regular craft workshops in the New Year with lots of suggestions as to what projects we could tackle.

Sparks reminded us of dates for our diaries then we voted to send the President’s flowerarrangement, made by Mavis, to Barbara Ashton as she has been poorly recently.

October’s Institute Meeting

We had a great meeting today, with a very interesting talk all about Devon Air Ambulance. We are strongly advised to download the What3Words app, which enables any of the emergency services to target an accurate location.

Several members put forward an idea for a new Brixham WI logo, all of which were very clever and thoughtful. Thank you all, it wasn't easy to choose!
***Someone left some knitting patterns behind! Tina has them!*****
And here is a comment just in: Just to say how enjoyable today’s meeting was and so nice to see everyone.

Tuesday 19 October 2021

We enjoyed a very sociable walk today, despite a little bit of Misty rain every now and then! Ending up at the very lovely Fishcombe Cove Café for a coffee and chat. What is not to like? Plans have been laid for Brixham WI on Tour on Saturday 4th December: bus to Paignton and then train to Exeter for a spot of shopping and lunch! Fab!

Well done to Barbara A!

A big thank you to Jackie Bufton and Devon WI - Environment & Rural Affairs! A really great selection of poems has been collected from DFWI members and printed here in this booklet! Yours for only £1.50! There are some very thought provoking poems - really worth a read! Our very own Barbara A has contributed! It will be available for you to see at our meeting on 20th October.

Of interest to any of you textile enthusiasts!
