Thank you, Tina, for this report on the

 DFWI Spring Council Meeting.

The meeting started with us being invited to sing Jerusalem along to a recording made by the Royal Philharmonic helped by a very proficient choir. A surreal and rather moving experience.

Standing Orders, Adoption of 2020 Composite Report, Presentation of Accounts and Appointment of Auditors were proposed and accepted either side of the first speaker, Laura Cowie from Devon Police's Cyber Crime Unit. There was a lot to take away from this, and I will just give a few of these here

  • 90% of phishing starts with an email – check the address that sent it. A personal address? It's definitely a scam

  • Report phishing to report@phishing.gov.uk or for texts to 7726. This helps track and stop the criminals

  • check your settings on your apps. Does the app really need access to your photos of microphone? Delete unused apps.

  • Passwords. Nothing obvious (grandson's name), don't write down, don't swap out letters for numbers (criminals have software to get round this). (That's one for me to attend to!), don't use the same password.

They need to be like the Andrex puppy – long and strong. She suggested using a phase

my 1st car was a Suzuki J410 which I had for 12 months. Then incorporate an extra letter T for Tesco, S for Sainsbury etc.

If you are unfortunate and are scammed, report it. actionfraud.police.uk. There were many useful bits of advice which I can relate if anyone is interested.

In the Chairman's address we learned of a loss of 10% of WIs. DFWI have a YouTube channel, and its own website is nearly ready to launch.

Details of the annual awards were given out, including the great news that Sparks Beattie from Brixham WI had been awarded the Chairman's Rose Bowl for “going a little further for her community”.

The main speaker was Angela Baker, the woman whose husband's death precipitated the WI Calendar and the subsequent films, plays, and worldwide attention and publicity for Bloodwise (formerly Lymphoma & Lymphoma Research) raising over £6million for leukaemia research. It was an interesting insight on how it started and the rollercoaster ride it became.

During the President's address we learned that Shirley May Saunders would be standing down.

Our new DFWI Chair is Evelyn Watson, our WI advisor! Congratulations to Evelyn!

And of course, there were thanks going to all!

Book Share

Our book share today was very interesting - we spent more time than usual discussing the book and decided that maybe we had all actually enjoyed it more than we thought!

The rest of my day was less exciting - whilst carrying the recycling bins in, I managed to trip on the net which was dangling from them. fml I went down like a sack of potatoes! no harm done, except for the scratches on my glasses!
Thank you, Jayne Stone for organising us!

This morning I walked to the pool in the rain, I got wet in the pool, walked home in the rain and then had a shower. Feeling really clean now! It was lovely to see 5 WI swimmers today! Same time, 8.30 am, same place, Admiral Pool, next Thursday!

Just walking in the rain.....🎼🎹

Some of us are the intrepid, it’s not the weather, it’s the right clothes types! Yes! We did meet at the Man and Boy statue today at 2 o‘clock in the rain! We met a new Sally and a new Wendy! Welcome! We managed to walk all the way round the inner harbour to the Old Fish Quay where we were treated to a custard tart, (thank you, Sue! ) to go with our hot drink. We discussed everything from slugs to dementia and extreme sports to crafts!

Next week: same time, same place, same day!
Wednesday 19th, 2pm, Man and Boy statue.

A fantastic opportunity to “attend” the NFWI Annual Meeting!

NFWI Annual Meeting 2021: Tuesday 8 June

We are pleased to announce that Observer Tickets for the 2021 NFWI Virtual Annual Meeting are now on sale!
This is a professionally produced hybrid meeting, with an excellent line up of speakers, made available for you to view from the comfort of your own home.
We understand that a virtual meeting is in no way a replacement for the usual face-to-face gathering of members, but we hope that this platform will allow you to engage with others, and the resolutions process, in a similar way. On the day of the meeting please take the time to meet and greet staff on NFWI Committee stands, purchase WI merchandise on the WIE stand, and chat with fellow members in the ‘tea rooms’ and in the one-to-one chat pane.
Observer tickets are priced at £9 each and we have an unlimited number on sale. One ticket is required per device (phone, iPad, laptop, desktop) and therefore small groups of members may choose to share the cost, and view the meeting locally together. Please ensure that any gatherings planned are in strict compliance with government regulations.
Tickets can be bought via My WI: https://mywi.thewi.org.uk/home
This event is for WI members only. Please do not share the direct link to the AM site with anyone as this will compromise the security of the event and risk individuals being denied access to the event on the day.
If you need help accessing My WI, please contact your MCS rep. For a video tutorial on accessing My WI, visit https://mywi.thewi.org.uk/welcome-to-my-wi

Our first adventure of 2021

We had a Great Adventure today! Some of us took the Western Lady ferry to Torquay, where we walked along the prom, ate fish and chips, some had an ice cream and we made plans for future adventures! Gorgeous weather - if a little windy on the ferry! - and scintillating company! Thank you everyone, I had a great day out with you all!

Next week: meet at the Man and Boy Statue at 2pm on Wednesday 12th May. Suitable for walkers and wanderers alike! Always aiming towards a café!
Does anyone fancy one of these activities for our next adventure? #BrixhamWIontour
