Cribbage news from Tina:

 Cribbage News.

Although it's the 1st Wednesday of the month this week, we are not meeting (for obvious reasons).
However, we will be having a cribbage session on the 8th January from 2pm to 4pm at Brixham rugby club, who have kindly allowed access. We're in the downstairs bar and newbies, experienced players and everyone in between are welcome. Please try to buy a drink to show support to the club.
In the meantime, look at this. The best hand you can ever get in crib. Please calculate the score ( and don't forget the one for his knob!)

Which one will you choose?

It is that time of our WI year again! The resolution shortlist has been published in the Nov/Dec issue of WI Life and on MyWI on the WI website. This is where you make your own decision and place your own vote at our January meeting. We count the votes and send the results to Devon Federation.

Here are your choices:-

1. Let’s talk about incontinence

It is estimated that 14 million people in the UK of all ages are suffering from bladder problems and a further 6.5 million with bowel problems. However, it is still a subject that is misunderstood and very hard to talk about. We call upon the UK Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Wales’ Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care to examine in detail all areas of health and wellbeing that are affected by incontinence issues. We call for the government to commit to an up-to-date audit to provide a national picture of incontinence care, offering a baseline from which to drive improved services. We call upon the members of the WI to raise public awareness, remove the stigma around incontinence, to help reduce the significant impact on people’s lives.

2. Bystanders can be lifesavers

There are over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests a year in the UK, and less than one in ten people survive. Women have a lower chance of surviving than men. Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillating can more than double the chances of survival. We call on WI members to work together to increase public confidence and training in the delivery of CPR and to work with local organisations to help improve access to defibrillators in their communities to give every person the best chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.

3. Join the repair revolution

There is a huge excess in clothing production which has devastating consequences for the environment. The WI calls on the UK Government to join the repair revolution and strengthen the law and investment to support a circular economy of clothing and fabrics in the UK, where repair and reuse are achievable, accessible, and affordable to all. We also call on WI members to promote clothing reuse and repair in their communities.

4. Eliminate landfill of medication packaging

Medication packaging, due to its complexity, is not routinely recyclable through local authority collections, usually leading to disposal in landfills. We call on the WI to proactively raise awareness by encouraging additional collection points where empty packaging can be easily returned for recycling. Furthermore, we call on manufacturing companies to acknowledge their moral responsibility to reduce their environmental impact by exploring simpler packaging alternatives that are easier to recycle or have less impact on the environment. These steps can significantly improve recycling rates to move towards eliminating landfill.

Our Christmas Party

Our meeting today was a great start to the Christmas season! A gorgeous array of food, Bucks Fizz, very generous donations to the Yes!Brixham food bank, delightful raffle prizes and excellent entertainment by Missin’ Tackle. They began by singing Jerusalem with us, and it was wonderful! Jean and Aldene won the handbag game in style and we all had a very sociable afternoon.  We enjoyed a great evening at the Upside Bar in Paignton (opposite the station and along a bit). The food was absolutely superb and the company top notch! So sorry Jan DW wasn’t able to make it.

Cribbage on Wednesday, 2 o’clock.

THE VENUE HAS CHANGED. TINA HAS ARRANGED FOR US TO GO TO

BRIXHAM RUGBY CLUB PLAYERS BAR, as golf club has a big lunch on.

PLEASE LET TINA KNOW YOU HAVE SEEN THIS!

What is your score in this hand?

Tuesday coffee morning lunch - on Monday! 🤩

Our monthly coffee morning regulars enjoyed a very lovely time over lunch at the Berry Head Hotel. We thought that next year we might transform the November coffee morning into lunch instead of December, as all of us had at least one more Christmas meal ahead of us this week. Not so much going on in November, so that could be preferable!

We covered a wide range of topics, as usual, including Christmas food in the 70s - look out for cheese and pineapple hedgehogs, vol au vents and black forest gateaux on our Christmas party table next week!

This beautiful card; could it be the subject of a craft afternoon next year?

A message from Jayne about Thursday:

If anyone coming to colouring would like lunch, please let me know. I need to liaise with the golf club.

WhatsApp or email or my phone.

Book Share - from Jayne

Bookshare met at the golf club today. Most people enjoyed Louis and Louise, which led to a discussion on modern times, differences(or not) on the lives of girls v boys and how events impact them. The new book is A More Perfect Union by Tammye Huf and next month’s bookshare will be Friday 3rd January 2025.

So many books recommended at bookshare today.

Apples Never Fall and A Husband’s Secret (Liane Moriarty) - recently on TV; who done it books by Felix Francis (Dick Francis’ son); Rough Music (Patrick Gale) a family saga; Mystery books by Louise Penny, whose latest book is The Grey Wolf; Midnight in Blue a Rebus book by Ian Rankin; the Figurine and One August Night, a follow up to the Island (Victoria Hislop); If no one speaks of Remarkable Things - an unusual book based on a street (Jon McGregor); A Christmas Carol, Hard Times and Little Dorrit (Charles Dickens); The Space Between Us (Doug Johnstone); Dry Hard- a laugh out loud book (Nick Spalding); Frank and Red (Matt Coyne); Demon Copperhead (based on the story of David Copperfield) (Barbara Kingsolver); the Dry by Jane Harper; The Whalebone Theatre - highly recommended (Joanna Quinn); the Fellowship of Puzzlemakers (Samuel Burr); Gilead (Marilynne Robinson).

Pewter workshop

We had a brilliant afternoon, hardly had a moment to speak or even breathe sometimes! There was a lot to do and the results were absolutely superb! I haven’t taken photos of all of the frames, so please will you add yours if it isn‘t here?

Thank you to Pat for showing us the one she made ages ago, which inspired us to do it. Thank you Sheila for organising, and to Jenny and Kate who were able to step in at the last minute when some couldn‘t make it. We hope you all feel better very soon. Our tutor, Jackie Bufton did a great job. (She must have been shattered!)

Pewter workshop

 Pewter workshop people!

Our tutor Jackie has not given a list of anything to bring - so maybe an apron if you are a mucky worker! You might want to bring a drink as we may not have time for a tea break.
Wasn’t this one clever? I loved it!

It’s Reverse Advent Calendar time again!
Grab a box - decorate it if you wish! - then each day for 24 days follow our guide to collect food and hygiene products.
All items will go straight into our food bank and Christmas hampers which we provide to locally supported families. You can choose to start now, or wait till the first of December; it’s a great way to start feeling festive and give back to the community!
When you’ve finished, pop it along to us at The Edge on Bolton Street, thank you! 🎄🎄
