I need crocheted or knitted poppies for a memorial installation called Standing with Giants - The People’s Tribute - Normandy 80. If you can help, please send me a message for more information.

What’s On?

Good Morning Brixham WI members! What is on the cards for this week?
Monday: From Sue: “So Monday walk we will meet as usual at 9.30 in Brixham then catch the train from Paignton to Exeter central. We will then visit the Cathedral, which is free until the end of Jan. Go and have some lunch then go over to the quay to meet the Redcoat. Maybe 5 of us could go on the tour. We could have a word to see when we could book a tour in a few weeks time after the rail strikes which run from 30 Jan to 5 Feb. The rest of us could then walk from Exeter to St David's by the river.”
Wednesday: Parchment Craft at 2 pm with Barbara.
Thursday: our New Year meal at the Berry Head Hotel, meet from 12.30 for 1 o’clock. (Only for those who have already booked, chosen and paid!)
Friday: Social coffee morning at the Berry Head Hotel 10.30.

January Institute Meeting

What a fabulous, sociable meeting! The people who wrote three facts about themselves made it all happen! Thank you all for participating, putting in such fun information which lead to a fascinating afternoon! Wow! We will certainly look at some people differently now!

No photos, sorry, too busy having fun!

Here is some of the feedback:

Really enjoyed today and getting to know people a bit better as well as faces to names

Really relaxed and friendly meeting

Only one day to go! Put your mug in the bag now so you won’t forget it! Also, have you thought about the resolutions? Prepared your slip of paper? Take a look at last week’s email for all the details!

Book Worms report from Rebecca, thank you!

Good morning. I got distracted and forgot to post about bookworms so apologies I’m late! We met on Wednesday and discussed the beloved girls by Harriet Evans. Some of us hadn’t been able to read the book or didn’t finish it. The overall view was it could have been about 200 pages shorter, was predictable and boring in the middle. Not a book some would read if it hadn’t been the book group book.

Other discussions included holidays, dogs, grandchildren and swimming.
Our new book is honey and spice by Bolu Babalola.

What’s On?

Apparently today is ’dress your pet day’! This week is ‘Eat Well week’ - so there is a reason to go out for lunch! Who knew?

😂
For our adventurous, action packed Brixham WI members this week:
Monday: meet at 9.30 for a walk without buses! They may be going to the pathways above waterside caravan park then perhaps over to Clennon Valley. Who knows? All WI members welcome to turn up and join in!
Wednesday: our meeting at 2pm. Please read your last week’s email and, for maximum enjoyment, be sure to bring what is required! All WI members encouraged to turn up and join in!
Friday: 10.30 coffee at the Berry Head Hotel. All WI members very welcome to join in!

Drumming, anyone?

At Brixham library this afternoon there were several WI members - coincidentally - who joined in with the drumming workshop! We had a great time! It was a real tonic and reminded us of the brilliant session we enjoyed at Lupton House a while back! Shall we do it again? The cost to hire Drum Devon meant that we required about 20 or more people to participate. Have a think and let us know at the meeting next Wednesday if it’s a yes from you!

Friday social

We spent a very warm and sociable morning, over a cup of tea or coffee at the Berry Head Hotel! Lovely company, and so many topics of conversation! Fab! Let’s do it again next week!

Here are ‘Flowers of the Day’ from a series of ‘Something of the Day’ photos on our Facebook page. Thank you to Barbara and Pat for these:

Book Share

What a great afternoon at Book Share today! Thank you all for your excellent conversation and company! Some of us read the book, (see photo) some started it and we all agreed that we did not like the Artist himself! The writing was good and the story ended in a most satisfactory manner! Incidentally none of us agreed with the reviews on the cover!
We have also read and would recommend: Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore, anything by Lianne Moriarty, Mob 6 Ingredient Meals, a cookery book for those who like exotic food, Sweet Caress by William Boyd, One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson, One Day by David Nicholls, Song Birds by Christy Lefteri and the Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell.

Discussion about new shops in Brixham: new bakers at Five Doors Up in Middle Street, a fab leather workshop and shop where Lulubelle used to be, the excellent new green grocer half way up Fore Street and possibly new bakers at what used to be the Strand Bakery…..

Brixham WI members who are planning to come to the meeting next week: look at your email! Can you bring three things to the meeting? (fully explained in the email!) Also some dates to note down in your diary. #soefficient #welovebrixhamwi

Mackerel picture of the Day

 Thank you, Tina.

Every member now has the opportunity to cast their individual selection on the resolution they support the most.

Resolution Shortlist 2023-24:
Make your selection

At the NFWI Resolution Shortlist Selection meeting on 3 October 2023 member and federation delegates shortlisted four resolutions which will now be taken forward for further debate and selection by members.

The shortlisted resolutions are:

  1. Dental Health Matters

There is a chronic shortage of NHS Dentists and people are suffering health issues as a result. The NFWI calls on the Government to increase investment in the training and retention of dentists and to review the current inadequate NHS contracts in order to ensure everyone can access an NHS dentist wherever they live.

  2. Impacts of poor housing conditions

Poor housing can have a deleterious effect on human health and wellbeing, safety and quality of life and can disproportionately affect the most vulnerable groups in society.

The NFWI calls on the UK Government to boost housing standards and regulations, increase funding for housing renovations, increase the supply of affordable and secure housing and strengthen collaboration with local authorities, housing associations and other relevant stakeholders to develop strategies that address local housing challenges.

  3. Say ‘no’ to gambling advertising

Harm caused by excessive gambling is a global problem. Some countries are already addressing this by banning advertising. The NFWI calls on members, the government, regulators, the NHS, educationalists and gambling charities to work together towards achieving a complete ban on gambling advertising. This will reduce gambling harm, save the NHS money, protect family relationships and decrease the number of suicides, around 400 per annum at present.

  4. Improving Outcomes for Women in the Criminal Justice System

There is an urgent need to radically reform decision-making in respect of women in the criminal justice system and in particular, pregnant women and women with children. We urge cross-government collaboration to deliver on the 2018 female offender strategy by setting goals, robust governance and performance measures to reduce the number of women who have committed non-violent offences from being imprisoned.

Twelve of us turned up for a coffee, a chat and a superb view today! Thank you all for your lovely company, it was a very sociable morning! If I had remembered my ‘phone, the photo would have been: ‘WI members of the day’! But, I didn’t, so it isn’t!
