MyWI

Are you wondering how to access MyWI?

Go to this website: www.thewi.org.uk

Look in the top right corner of the screen and you will see MyWI

Click on it and you will see this screen:

If it doesn’t work for you, I can reassure you that Tina (our MCS rep) has already entered and checked your email address on the system, so use the form to contact NFWI to get help.

If you have changed your email address from the one you gave Tina when you joined us, and haven’t let us know, then you will need to contact her!

Clean Rivers campaign

We have all received an email from NFWI about the Clean our Rivers campaign. Do you wish to add your voice or take some action? Look at the email and MyWI to find out how. Here is a passage copied from MyWI:

We're happy to see the government is taking action, however, regulators not only need more powers but also resources. Given the sheer scale of the sewage crisis, we’re concerned that the measures won’t create the transformational change we need to fix our broken water system and want to see a UK-wide statutory public inquiry to deliver reform of the water system

Designated bathing waters are key to cleaning up our polluted waters, as they are the only places where water quality is regularly monitored for its effect on human health and legal obligations are put on polluting industries to clean up their act. We need to see bathing water applications in England urgently reopened after DEFRA decided to put them on hold earlier this year.

The photos are of a couple of the related craft projects: a crochet dragonfly key ring and a knitted banner

Our summer picnic - from Tina

We all had super weather for our summer picnic. Sorry that a few of us were not able to attend, but we all had a good chatter, put the world to rights and sourced some wisdom or stuff from the group.

Book Share report from Jayne

Interesting debate on this month’s book, Blood and Sugar by Laura Shepherd Robinson. Nobody really liked the storyline but people were drawn into the book, a sign if a good writer. Some of the discussion revolved around the list of characters at the front with supporters and opponents.

Three books were highly recommended,
The Swift and the Harrier by Minette Walters,
Carrying Albert Home by Homer Hickam (all true except the parts which aren’t)
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.

If you fancy and afternoon chat, focussed on books and related topics, there is space on Bookshare. Just let Jayne know
Bookshare travelled down memory lane. On BBC Sounds you can find the Navy Lark and Gambits by Eley Williams You TV is showing Whitstable Pearl and Sister Boniface. Members travels have taken them to old haunts, with differing outcomes.
Other recommendations from Bookshare include the Joe Pickett and Hoyt/ Dewell series by C. J. Box as well as Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

Sad news of a former WI member

 Hi Brixham WI.

We at Uffculme WI wanted to let you know about the sad death of Joan Collins. A member of Uffculme WI for many years and previously of Brixham WI. There may not be many there that still remember her but she was a lovely lady with an amazing sense of humour and we thought it best to let you know. Regards, Ros - Secretary

July Institute meeting

Brixham WI members were treated to a very interesting talk from Julia Fox, the curator of Totnes Fashion and Textiles Museum and who brought a selection of spectacular Edwardian clothing from the museum. We were shown just how many layers the Edwardian lady had to put on, even before she could put on her dress. (And the tribulations of washing/cleaning and drying these items was clarified.)

Mrs Fox advised that the museum would be closing in October and relocating to Falmouth University which has a Textile Department.
So Lynn is going to plan a trip for us to visit before it closes.

For our Brixham WI members…

Available through DFWI - Brixham WI members check your email to find the details and how to apply.
