Wednesday Craft Afternoon

A very sociable afternoon was had today, improved enormously by the delicious cake bought by Jayne Stone from Trinity Cakes in Fore Street. Wow! We did some natty work with wool and turned out some very pretty flowers!

Monday, 23 January 2023

We have two places at our New Year meal at the Livermead House Hotel on Thursday, meeting there at noon. £25. Sadly a couple of our members are unable to attend. Is there any member who would like to step in at the last minute?

January Institute Meeting

The room was full, and we welcomed some visitors who joined in with everything! Our rendition of Jerusalem resulted in praise from one visitor in particular who said that the Riviera Singers are in need of more members!

We had a brief look at the four resolutions, and each member voted for the one they wish to see go through to be debated at the NFWI Annual Meeting in Cardiff. Most votes were cast for Save our Water. All of the results will be sent to DFWI and then all of the results from Devon will be sent to NFWI.

We had a trial sales table…the results of that have yet to be announced!

Our activity this afternoon was a game of beetle; organised and explained by Mary H. It was a lot of fun!

Susan F read us a short and very powerful thought for the day, Jill P won the flower competition, with Jane M coming second. Mary W and Sue E ran a very good raffle, with prizes snapped up by the lucky winners.

There is a visit to Torbay recycling centre being organised by Tina on February 8th; two musical evenings at Brixham theatre (Lynn A) and the Aida in Torquay in April (Sparks). Plans are all in place for the New Year meal organised by Mary C. The monthly Tuesday coffee morning attendees were given the choice of the café at Lupton House or the recently reopened Brixham Does Care café, under the theatre in the Scala Hall. The Lupton House café was the overwhelming favourite. Sew Mondays is on 23rd this month - please tell Jill Haslem if you wish to join in.

At our January craft meeting we will be making flowers using wool and a fork! Yes! Please bring some wool - double knitting or finer, and a fork from your cutlery drawer. All other kit and materials will be provided.

A big thank you to Jayne and Mary for organising and running another fun and successful meeting!

A Book Worm report from Rebecca

We had a good time at bookworms this morning. We discussed The Island by Victoria Hislop (enjoyed by everyone) and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern which only one of us finished as it wasn't enjoyed.

We found out there is a follow up to the Island called One August Night which we'll all be looking for.
Other booked and authors recommended The Nightingal
by Kristen Hannah, Robert Galbraith, Harlen Coben and American Dirt by Jeannir Cummins. We're a fun group and have spaces avaliable if you think you'd like to join us. Every second Wednesday of the month. Let me know if you'd like to come along.

Here is Rebecca on the left (with Hilary) in case you are not sure who she is and you would like to join her Book Worms!

Dick Whittington

A small, select and perfectly formed group from Brixham WI went to the Dick Whittington panto at the Palace theatre in Paignton. Oh yes we did! And we had a brilliant time! The show was excellent! We did a lot of cheering, booing and joining in - and did actually draw the attention of the players, who noticed us shouting about Brixham! Thank you, Lynn Asher for organising and to Jayne Stone for driving three of us there.
Are you interested in seeing Aida in Torquay 12th April? Please let me know!

Devon Drumming workshops

 Drumming Workshops!

Last year a couple of Brixham WI members joined a 6 week drumming workshop, absolutely loved it and would now like to share it with the rest of us! Everyone certainly enjoyed the joint session we organised at Lupton House altogether.
Monday evening from 5.20 for 1 1/2 hours, at Lupton house. Cost £50 for the five weeks. Unfortunately due to the road closures and most of our group of 7 coming in from Torquay, 4 are transferring to Marldon, our class looks about to fail which would be a huge shame! So, would any of our members like to come along and give it a go! https://www.facebook.com/drummingdevon

Brixham WI Darts Players!

We had a really fun afternoon - not too competitive! A big thank you to Jacqui and Annette for organising (and for doing all the sums, with Jane P’s help, too!). What larks! We will be back!

Our Virtual Sports Trophy, very shiny and brightly polished, was handed by Carol P (who won it at the skittle afternoon, you will recall!) over to Jane P for her marvellous skill in being the only one of us to get a bulls eye! Well done, Jane!

Here is Jane P taking aim:

Here is when she realised she was the winner!
