Our Group Meeting!

We welcomed some members from Paignton WI and from Galmpton & Churston WI to our afternoon ….which turned out to be not a Treasure Hunt after all!

Instead we drank tea, played an excellent quiz and then ate some delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes! Everyone agreed what a fun and friendly afternoon it was! The treasure hunt is postponed!

The quiz winners won an egg cup and crème egg!

There was a fab prize for the team at the other end of the scale!

A huge thank you to Lynn, Jayne and Ann for planning and organisation. Also to all of our kind and clever cake makers, and to the hardworking folk who slaved away for us in a hot kitchen. Thank you all, we really appreciate your efforts and we will take our turn next time!

Treasure Hunt today!

We are going ahead with our treasure hunt and afternoon tea today! Wear a raincoat just in case there is a shower! We are all looking forward to seeing everyone!  (There is a plan B if necessary!)

Tuesday Walk

Six of us met at the Man and Boy statue this morning and decided to walk to the Guardhouse Café on Berry Head. The weather was delightful, the company excellent and we even met Sally Carter en route! Plenty of signs of spring, too! Gorgeous!

An opportunity too good to miss!

Last call for Brixham WI members who would like to join us at Brixham theatre on Wednesday 19th April to see the film: “Mrs Harris Goes to Paris”. If you haven’t heard about it, please look at your emails for details of the offer! Friday of this week is the deadline!

Resolutions News!

The NFWI Board of Trustees has agreed to put forward the top (one) resolution to the Annual Meeting in June.

The wording of the resolution is as follows:
Clean rivers for people and wildlife
Water quality in our rivers is shameful. Legally, designated bathing waters must be regularly monitored for pollution. The NFWI urges its members, the wider public, local authorities and Government to make, support and promote applications for official designated bathing sites on appropriate stretches of rivers in their area. This will be as instrumental to the clean up of rivers as it has been for water quality improvement at coastal beaches.
What happens next?
Members now have the opportunity to learn more about the issues, and to discuss the resolution in their WIs before deciding how their Link delegate should vote at the Annual Meeting.
WIs and federations are also encouraged to hold discussion events to allow members to consider how they wish their delegate to vote. The NFWI will also be hosting a discussion event in April, you can read more and register here.
How does my WI cast our vote?
All WIs get one vote– for or against the resolution.
WIs may choose to give their link delegate discretion to decide how to vote after hearing the speakers and the debate at the Annual Meeting. Please ensure your WI makes it clear to your link delegate whether you are granting her discretion.

Riviera Literary Festival

Four of us went to spend the day at the Riviera Literary Festival

at the Palace Theatre in Paignton today, intermingled with a delicious lunch at the Shoreline At Paignton Beach. Stephanie Austin was very interesting, talking about her career as an author which began when she was 65! Our second talk was about Mary Shelley’s life and work.

We managed to fit in a cup of tea and cake to round off an excellent day! Thank you, Lynn Asher for organising and driving, and to Wendy C and Annie for your lovely company!
