Our speaker gave us a fascinating and very informative talk about the history of Sutton Seeds and explained the continuing progress being made in the development of vegetables and flowers. Resistance to disease both in the plant world and also for those consuming them, too! He encouraged us all to cease buying packets of salad leaves from the supermarket as the vitamins and minerals contained in them begin to disappear after only a few hours of picking! Once they have been doused in chlorine to kill the bugs, packed, transported, displayed on the shelves and then stored in our fridge, possibly a couple of days have passed before we consume them. A packet of mixed leaves, cut and come again, can be planted in a container on the windowsill or patio - much better food and health value as well as the cost! (Also more fun!)
There were plenty of workshops and events to sign up for: Dabble Afternoon, 22nd March, Silver workshop 28th March, Treasure Hunt 29th March, Spring Council Meeting 26th April, film night at Brixham theatre: Mrs Harris Goes to Paris - 19th April, with a 50% discount! Only £2.50 a ticket for our members! If you couldn’t attend yesterday and would like to participate in any of these, please contact one of the committee immediately!
