National Hedgehog Day?

Today is national hedgehog day, so we made a prickle of hedgehogs.
(Well, I made up the first part, but it might be! It does seem that every day is the Day of something or another).
It was a most enjoyable, relaxing amd sociable afternoon. We covered a great deal of ground in our conversation! Thank you to Jayne Stone for good instructions. Also thank you to Pat for chocolate biscuits! Also thank you for our cups of tea!

Our speaker today.

Dawn Ireland, the Torbay Herbalist who works from the Hawthorne Practice in Torquay, came to talk to us today about kitchen remedies. What do we store in our kitchen which can be used to benefit our health? Such a fascinating talk! We learned such a lot! NB If you already take strong medicines, it is wise to check before using any extra remedies.

Tea promotes healing of small wounds - slap a tea bag (cool!) on to a cleaned wound and leave it while you enjoy the cup of tea. Blisters on your feet? Make a cup of tea, pour it into a foot bath and relax.

Mushrooms boost the immune system and vitamin D, particularly if, when you bring your mushrooms home turn them upside down on a plate and put outside in the sun so they can soak up the vitamin D. Prepare mushroom soup to give your body a boost.

Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables each day. Red, purple and blue fruit and vegetables are especially good for the heart

Onions and garlic -anti viral, anti microbial and antiseptic, with garlic especially good for the heart, lowers cholesterol and aids digestion. At this time of year chop onions (garlic, too, if you like) and layer in a jar with honey or sugar (or glucose) ending with a layer of the sweet. Put on the lid and leave for a week or so. Strain off the onions and use in cooking. The remaining syrup is an excellent cough mixture, it is an excellent layer of defence against catching a virus. 1tsp  at a time.

Lemon - 1 tsp on the tongue will stop hiccoughs. Also vinegar which doesn’t taste quite the same!

Mustard - when you feel chilled or have a cold or flu, add 1tsp of mustard (powder or ready mixed) to a foot bath.

Mustard and or chilli make an excellent poultice to help reduce inflammation and pain. Mix the chilli with a little oil and the mustard with water, place in a handkerchief and apply to an aching joint. Best not to apply directly on the skin, as it can be very hot.

Turmeric - an anti inflammatory more effective than ibuprofen. It takes a while to build up, and is more effective when used with ginger or black pepper.

Hawthorne tea is very good for those with high blood pressure.

Cinnamon and fenugreek are both effective in maintaining even blood glucose levels.

For those who don’t sleep well: a lettuce sandwich- lettuce has sedating properties, especially wild lettuce, which is very bitter! 1/2 tsp nutmeg in a drink or on food is a good sedative, as well.

Cakes!

We enjoyed some divine cakes at our Treasure Hunt afternoon, etched firmly into my memory! Here is one list of ingredients which someone had kindly brought with them. If you sampled the banana pecan muffins, you will be delighted! Perhaps others amongst our bakers might give their recipes, too?

From DFWI

Our Combined Arts committee is eager to support the retention of mobile libraries in Devon. Many of you are aware that Devon County Council wish to close Devon’s Mobile Libraries. This will have a severe impact on rural communities. There will be a council meeting on 28th September to decide. Support has been given to this by Michael Morpurgo, Stephen Fry and other celebrities. A local Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin is arranging a petition and asks WI members to sign https://www.change.org/SaveOurMobileLibrary

The Great Paignton Paint Out

More information from the Artizan Gallery, Torquay, about the Great Paignton Paint Out on Saturday 23rd September

Bookworms

This month bookworms read the wasp factory by Ian banks. I think this was unanimously disliked. Some stopped reading due to the content. We decided we’d describe it as dark and weird!
Hopefully this months book will be enjoyed it’s called in a thousand different ways by Cecelia Adhern.
Other books read this month include some of the Seven Sisters books by Lucinda Riley, Danielle Steel, Devon Copperhead and unfolding the truth by Sue Upton.
We still have spaces if anyone would like to join us.
Thank you Rebecca for the words and Jean for the photo.

Interesting.

Have you come across ’All on the Board’? They post everyday, actually in real life on the underground in London and virtually on Instagram. Here is today’s post - sometimes they are witty, sad, funny and always insightful.

! Wow! Such cakes! what a fabulous afternoon! Over half our members turned out to have a walk around Brixham looking carefully about them for the answers to Lynn and Hilary’s -fiendishly clever in some cases - treasure hunt. It was very warm for such activity, but teams were very keen indeed to complete in good time! Three teams ended up with the same score, so it went to the tie breaker photo which best represents Brixham. Norma, Sue Martin and Trish McCallum were the winners with Aldene Martin, Jill Haslam, Margaret T and Carol R winning the coveted wooden spoons! Well done to all of the teams who did a great job! Those who stayed behind had a brain teasing quiz on Brixham!
Huge thanks to Lynn for her planning, preparations and organisation. Much appreciation to all of the cake makers - they were delicious! Perhaps we might have some baking tips and recipe swaps one day? Someone kindly left one recipe which I shall post.
What a great time we all had, thank you all for coming along, for helping and for making it such a success!
