So, who was the murderer? Thanks all for a splendid afternoon

Thursday Afternoon Murder Club!

Our Thursday Afternoon Murder Club held a sleuthing afternoon at Churston Golf Club today! After a delicious lunch, served by very the patient and kind people at the Golf Club, we moved on to our murder mystery game. Thank you to Jacquie for the equipment, and to Moira for running the game! Everyone played their parts extremely well, and it was great fun!

Thank you to Carol for setting us off down this particular road, which we shall resume after the summer!

Wednesday afternoon card making

The card making afternoon was very successful, yesterday, with these lovely results! Well done everyone!

DFWI Spring Council Meeting

Evelyn Watson, our County Chair, introduced the meeting by encouraging all Devon WIs to adopt and embrace change as we are all becoming used to meeting together again.
There were two very different and interesting presentations this morning at the Spring Council meeting: one gave us a whistle stop tour of the pelvic floor muscles and the other a very positive and optimistic look at climate change.
Essentially, the message from our Chair and both speakers is that we can make a difference - in all areas of our lives!

Above is the cover of Tom Heap’s recent publication.
Below, please note the ideal posture to assume for sitting on the toilet!

Good afternoon ladies.  I have been given some books for World Book Day.  Could the ladies who would like to join bookshare (i.e. not current members) please contact me for a copy?  Thanks

Jayne

Thank you Spike and Chico for your company, too!

Lunch and Colouring 5th May

Are you intending to join everyone at the lunch and colouring on Thursday 5th May? Please tell Jayne immediately so that she can let the Golf Club know.

Monday walk

Monday walkers had a brilliant time today! Hilary came prepared with a leaflet on a walking tour of St Mary’s, giving us little snippets of information as we went along. It said it would take an hour! 🤣😂🤣 It took us well over three! We met a very interesting resident of St Mary’s Square who gave us some more history of her own house, which had been built as one of two police houses!
We had a welcome stop at Sue Martin’s for hot drinks and the most marvellous ginger cake. (‘I just threw it together last night’ said Sue. Well, please come and throw a few cakes together at my house anytime! ). Thank you all for your lovely company, Gail, Hilary Bligh, Jean Bartlett and Trish McCallum
No Monday walk next week as we will all be too busy being pirates!

Flower Competition Rule Reminder!

Here are two points to ponder:

1. clarification for our members who enter our flower of the month competition - only a single bloom will actually be judged, even if more blooms in one vase have been accepted on entry. (Back to the stern, old style WI judging rules here, then! )
2. We had an interloper at our meeting, as caught on camera! (Update! News just in! He is an official, probably checking on the stocks of G &T for us!)

We found the Lost Librarian!

Six of us went over to Paignton Library this afternoon to try out their escape room! We had to search for clues in interactive books, follow a story about three women who were accused of being witches in the 1600s in Exeter. It was very interesting and quite taxing! Thank you for a lovely afternoon, everyone!

Thank you, also, to Rebecca Carpenter for letting us know it was on! Sadly it has now ended.

Mary C has been very busy, making her favourite quilt so far, using mother of pearl flowers for the quilting. How absolutely gorgeous!

Sew Mondays news

Sew Mondays group is continuing with another meeting in May. This is open to all Brixham WI members! You don’t require any marvellous sewing skills or kit, simply an interest in sewing and enjoying the company of others while you do it! If you would like to join us, please let me know!

Are you still using cling film?

Single use plastics are definitely off the agenda - so how about this for a good solution?

Dart Bay Food Crafts and Skills offer this interesting session:

We have a lovely Wax Wraps Workshop planned for May if you fancy a go let us know. It will be held in St Mathias Church in Torquay on 18th May in the morning

Further to yesterday’s meeting…

What I forgot to say at our Annual Meeting yesterday….. was a huge thank you to Carol Roberts for taking the register at all of our meetings, and to Jayne Stone for organising such an interesting and varied programme for this coming year. Jayne has also instigated our very successful Book Share (we may have to start up another one very soon!) as well as the popular lunch and colouring afternoons! So, a belated thank you to you both.

I did thank Carolyn Coe yesterday,( in her absence, so I hope your ears were burning, Carolyn!) for all of her contributions to our Facebook page, valued and applauded by most of those present!

Our Annual Meeting

We held a great Annual Meeting today at Brixham Cricket Club.

There was flag waving, Woman of the Year voting, commendations for all our endeavours, change of committee officers, a quiz, and lots of laughs .
Our very worthy winner of Woman of the Year - Sue M

We showed our connection by joining together our named bunting flags - thank you Sew Mondays team!

Barbara asked Evelyn to judge the flower competition - clearly it was a lot of fun!

The members kindly presented roses to Tina, Wendy M and to me, along with some very kind words. Thank you.

Thursday, 14 April 2022

More fun…..

Are any of our members interested in coming along to Paignton library escape room? Read on… and then let me know immediately if you wish to join us!

You are invited to solve the mystery of The Lost Librarian in Paignton Library this Easter.
The Lost Librarian is a ground-breaking escape room for all ages (12 yrs + with guidance, younger audiences must be accompanied by an adult).
Using interactive mechanical books hidden on the shelves of the escape room, individuals or small groups of up to 6 people work together to unlock the next puzzle in the sequence of a 60-minute journey – a journey which uncovers a fantastical tale of the last known witches in the UK and the legacy they left behind.

More information is available about this year’s resolution:

  MEMORANDUM

Date: 30 March 2022

Dear all,

I am writing to invite you and members of your federation to an Annual Meeting resolution webinar. We would appreciate it if you could pass this invitation on to your members via email and share on social media.

As we get closer to the Annual Meeting in June, every WI is encouraged to consider how they wish their delegate to vote at the Annual Meeting. This year, in addition to the local and regional resolutions events organised by WIs and federations, the NFWI is hosting a virtual resolution event.

The event will take place on Monday 25 April at 7pm, via Zoom, and will be a great opportunity for members to come together and learn more about this year’s resolution topic ahead of deciding how their Annual Meeting delegate should vote. The event will not consider arguments for and against the resolution, but will allow members to find out more about the issues.

Members will hear from Dr Hannah Belcher, researcher at King’s College. Hannah has lectured in Psychology and mental health since 2016, for both the Open University and Anglia Ruskin University. Her focus includes the often late and missed diagnosis of autistic women.

The event will be chaired by Nicky Amos, NFWI Chair of Public Affairs, and there will be an opportunity for members to ask questions at the end.

Members who wish to attend can register their interest by email to pa@nfwi.org.uk. The meeting will have limited capacity, so spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Attendees will then receive joining instructions closer to the date.

A recording of the meeting will be available to view afterwards.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with the Public Affairs Department via email (pa@nfwi.org.uk) or phone (020 7371 9300 ext. 2002).

Kind regards,

Emma Holland-Lindsay Head of Public Affairs

Drumming!

Oh yes! Brixham WI does drumming, and how! What a great afternoon! It is official, we have rhythm!

Sorry about the poor quality of the photos, and to Anita who is not captured on film for posterity! To Lynn, Tracey and Vanessa - so sorry you had to miss out; we will definitely be doing it again!
