Women Walk the World

What a glorious morning for our ACWW Women Walk the World. We walked in a very beautiful part of our world, with an excelllent guide, thank you Sue Martin! The brief history and snippets of local history were very interesting, we all apreciated you finding it all out for us. We met Marjorie, sitting quietly in a little bower, and wandered carefully up to the fairy door in the large tree. Marjorie is a sculpture of the Mother of one of the Lupton volunteers. It was made over 30 years ago, it was her final piece at college. She had it in her garden for a while but scared the postman and then offered it to Lupton. It's part metal and clay. (More text below the pictures)

We didn’t complete the walk planned by Sue (the café was calling us…) so she has kindly agreed to show us that one on another day. It was lovely to see Ann Parker and Mary Williams.

Spring Council Meeting

A big thank you to Devon WI for organising such an informative and enjoyable day in Torquay today! The stalls in the hall were varied and interesting - a number of our party couldn’t resist a gorgeous leather handbag! - and the speakers were fascinating! Floella Benjamin was inspiring, amazing …everything we anticipated and so much more! What an inspiring woman!

We learned that membership numbers are enormously reduced, both nationwide and in Devon, as are the number of Institutes. Pre Covid there were about 250 WIs in Devon, now there are only 158. It is good to note that we are not following the trend here! I took some photos of the Devon WI bunting, created by each WI several years ago.

Our Annual Meeting

turned out to be a very relaxed and sociable affair! (With fabulous cakes!) We began by running through all of our activities, so that others could see who to ask if they wished to try something new. Sue M described her plans for our ACWW Women Walk the World morning on 28th April at Lupton House - we will all focus on it being a sunny, dry day! A big thank you to Viv Watts and Hazel Raybould who were our tellers, and were most helpful. We appreciate all of our lovely members who each put in a lot of effort to make everything run so smoothly.

We missed a few of our members who are unwell, and send very best wishes to you. Xx

Book Share - thank you Wendy M

We all enjoyed Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo and agreed that the characters were sympathetic and that they faced many of the same dilemmas and situations that we all have to deal with at some time in life.

We also discussed two books which were recently adapted for television but were careful not to give away the endings because not everyone had seen them!

Anthony Horwitz – Magpie Murders

Agatha Christie - Why Didn’t They Ask Evans

Some of the other books that we’ve enjoyed recently are:

Safraz Manzoor – Greetings from Bury Park

Louise Penny – The Chief Inspector Gamache series (18 books!)

Ellis Peters - The Cadfael Chronicles

Adriana Trigiani - The Big Stone Gap

Patrick Ness - Chaos Walking

John Green – Looking for Alaska

Colleen Hoover – It Ends With Us

Maeve Binchy – Evening Class

Lessons In Chemistry – Bonnie Garmus

Still Life – Sarah Winman

The Reading List – Sarah Nisha Adams

This month’s book is Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz.

Book Worms - thank you, Rebecca

Bookworms met today. We read ‘the bread the devil knead’ by Lisa Allen-Agostini. Overall we enjoyed it although it was harder to read as written as the main character would speak on Trinidadian Creole but we agreed if it was written as we would, it wouldn’t have had the same impact. It was a sad story of lifetime abuse but with some hope for the future of the character and we could have used a glossary for some of the words used. We’re hoping for a lighter story this month!

Book recommendations:
The 100 years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin
The tea planters daughter by Janet Macleod Trotter
Cilka’s story by Heather Morris
Those who have loved by Victoria Hislop
Raising the Kanneh-Mason’s
Tell No One by Halen Coben
Lovely People by Mike Gayle
Weight of Water by Anita Shreve
lessons in Chemistryby Bonnie Garmus
Bonuse TV show
Rainy days

From our last Institute meeting:

Notes from our speaker, Tom Sharples:

VEGETABLES
Basil Midnight - a bronze leaved trailing type for growing on it's own or with flowers in containers
Runner/French Bean crosses which can self pollinate if bees are not flying. Moonlight (white flowered), Firestorm (red flowered), Jackpot (Dwarf mixed flower colours for containers)
Tomatoes - Blight resistant types e.g Crimson Crush (standard size), Crimson Cocktail (cherry-type)
Aubergine F1 Scorpio - grafted type - very productive cropper
FLOWERS
Begonia Non-Stop mix, Impatiens Divine mix, French Marigold Zenith and Petunia Tidal Wave - these were examples of new breeding resulting in what are known as 'Mule' hybrids
'Mule' types do not set seed, but endeavour to do so right through the first frosts. Thus they are constantly producing new flowers to cover the fading ones. So no need to do all that 'dead-heading!
