Patchwork Post no 2

Or...Cutting up Pieces of Fabric in order to Sew them Back Together!

Our first task Is a practice one - to learn the skills by making a pin cushion.
First cut out four pieces of fabric 4” x 4” 20cm x 20cm.
Cut as accurately as possible.

Have your iron ready to press the fabric at every stage. It makes the process a lot more accurate.
Take two pieces, right sides together, and sew together as shown above. You will see in the photo that I have made a small reverse sewing at each end to secure the stitching.
Repeat with the second pair.
Press flat, with the seam allowance pressed to one side, (not opened out).
Lay the two joined pieces, right sides together, pin along the seam line as shown in the photo below. You are aiming to align both seams as accurately as you can.

Pin as shown and sew.

Remove the pins and press open, with the seam allowance to one side.

Now, to practise your decorative sewing .... sew alongside each seam as in the photo:

To make the pin cushion you will need some stuffing - this is from an old lumpy pillow!
