Relaxing and enjoyable afternoon with Brixham WI!

Thanks to Sandy's hospitality we were able to enjoy an indoor garden party! It had stopped raining, but was very grey, so we opted for an inside event! The table was spread with gorgeous food and there was lashings of tea on offer (thank you Sandy, Barbara and anyone else who was serving tea!) we had plenty of time to chat and enjoy each other's company, not to mention browsing the sale table. A big thank you also to the washing up volunteers, including Chris, only at her second WI event and already mucking in!
Our attention was drawn to two dates: Kingswear WI cream tea held on WI day, 16th September and the county Christmas shopping trip to Cheltenham on 3rd December.

Summer garden party recipe

Pecan Tassies

Tart Shells

1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened

3 oz cream cheese, softened

1 cup Plain flour

Filling

2 tbsp butter or margarine, melted

3/4 cup brown sugar

1   egg

1 teaspoons vanilla

1 cup pecan halves, finely chopped

 Icing sugar (optional)

1
Preheat oven to 350°F. For tart shells, beat butter and cream cheese until well blended. Add flour; mix until a soft dough forms.
2
shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place balls of dough into ungreased cups of a 24 cup mini muffin pan. Dip a tart shaper in flour; press into dough with even pressure until dough rises slightly above rim of pan. (Or use fingers to squish dough to form a cup!)
3
For filling, melt butter. Stir in brown sugar, egg and vanilla. Finely chop pecans and add to mixture, stir well.
4
Put filling into each tart shell (do not overfill). Bake 20-25 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove from oven; cool in pan 3 minutes. Remove from pan to cool completely. Sprinkle with icing sugar, if desired.

Something new at the craft afternoon!

Shrinking Plastic! Well, it was new to me! I remember people shrinking crisp packets in the oven, long ago.... Or is that one of those myths?
We had expert tuition (and help at the crucial, roller coaster moments), a wide choice of materials to use and plenty of ideas offered for our first attempts. There is the lovely, peaceful moment at first, when you are choosing and shading the design. Step on to the roller coaster as soon as the hot air gun is turned on! The key is simply to hold your nerve, as well as a spot of adept use of a wooden stick!
I'm hooked now!
Some people worked on an on-going project, with very lovely results. We all enjoyed the tea and biscuits! (Not to mention the company!)

A very busy coffee morning!

There was  a flurry of activity, first thing this morning, carrying all of the lovely cakes and a wide variety of bric a brac (please refer to one of the photos below for a sample...) into the Methodist church hall. The kitchen ladies prepared the necessary ingredients whilst the tables were covered with our bright red and green checked cloths. Soon our customers arrived and it was quite busy.

Our Birthday Party in May - photos just in!

We celebrated with Uffculme WI and were royally entertained by Uketricks and our Drama Group. It was a very sociable and enjoyable afternoon.

Urgent Action needed!

Today NHS Blood and Transplant has released new figures which show that for the first time in more than a decade the number of deceased organ donors has fallen which means that 224 fewer people received a life-saving transplant last year. NHSBT is calling on everyone in the UK to discuss organ donation with their families.
Our 2014 resolution Time to Talk About Organ Donation is needed now more than ever and can help you have the conversation with loved ones or put your name on the organ donor registry. Get involved with the campaign here: http://www.thewi.org.uk/…/current-campaigns-an…/time-to-talk
The NFWI has launched a campaign to get members talking about organ donation. A mandate on increasing organ donation was passed at the 2014 AM on 7 June 2014 with a 98% majority.

Ten of us crowded into Kate's sitting room this afternoon ready to discuss the plans for our Christmas Party Entertainment. The ideas flowed.... And so did the laughter! It looks as if it will be lots of fun! The dates are all set for rehearsals in October, most Thursday afternoons.

July's meeting - a wander through some local history

We listened to a fascinating account of the Tayleurs of St Mary Church, covering plenty of emotion, smuggling and much interest. Many members will be visiting that area again, looking at it quite differently!
We were reminded that our next fundraising coffee morning is at the Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday 21st July, opening for customers at 10am. Please can we bring cakes and items for the sale table.
Here are some photos taken at the recent centenary celebration:
