DFWI Spring Council Meeting

You missed an excellent day, folks! It was superb! The first speaker was the Black Farmer, who gave an entertaining and very inspiring talk. I thought, ‘how is the afternoon speaker going to top that?’
Well! Christina Lamb, the chief foreign correspondent for The Times was enthralling. In response to a question from the floor about what we, the WI could do to help the women Christina told us about, she recommended simply sending messages to let them know we are thinking of them - they haven’t been forgotten.
Here is the beautiful embroidered panel used to decorate the lectern.

ACWW Women Walk the World

We are setting off from the corner of Gillard and Centry Roads at 9am on Tuesday 30th April to walk to Berry Head. We will call in to the Guardhouse Café for a delicious brunch - or just a coffee if you prefer!
Let’s hope we have the same lovely weather as last year!

Tuesday Craft

A great deal of fun work was undertaken today at the Craft Group meeting. We all stencilled several cards using lovely glittery paints and also had the chance of a good chat over a cuppa.

April Institute Meeting

It was a fun filled and varied meeting today! Our drama group (aka the committee!) put on a sunshine summer performance to much laughter! Then we moved on to a tea and cake break (thank you very much for all of the delightful and delicious cakes), followed swiftly by our Annual Meeting. Tina presented a very good round up of our previous year’s activities! What a lot we fitted in! The accounts were approved and Mary thanked everyone for all of their contributions to the smooth running of Brixham WI. Several members of the committee stood down, and Sparks was voted as the next President. Mary was thanked for the excellent way she has lead Brixham WI. Lorna read a lovely poem about WI presidents, and Mo gave a touching thought for the month. We voted pretty much unanimously to support both resolutions.
We welcomed two new members, bringing our total membership to 48!
The president’s flowers were delivered to Margaret T who is very unwell at the moment.

Easter coffee morning!

Our Easter coffee morning was very busy - thank you to everyone who came along to have a coffee and a chat! Our team was very busy, with lots of very willing and hard working WI members (and one of our guests - thank you!) who hardly had time to draw breath. Sterling work, everyone, thank you! We raised £245 - and we have some delightful Easter treats to bring to our meeting next Thursday! Members will have the opportunity to bag a cute yellow chick, colourful bunny .....

News of one of our past resolutions

Don’t miss this inspiring article in the Express about the WI’s Care Not Custody campaign, which was launched in 2008 calling for an end to the inappropriate detention of people with mental health problems.
This campaign began after the son of a WI member took his own life in custody, which led to her proposing the resolution to go forward to the 2008 NFWI Annual Meeting.
In partnership with the Prison Reform Trust, the Care not Custody campaign aimed to bring an end to the use of prison as a ‘default option’ for people with mental health needs or learning disabilities. The campaign succeeded in securing Government backing and £75m was invested in the development of liaison and diversion services offering early intervention in police stations and courts.

Celebrating the Associated Country Women of the World.

Our walk is on Tuesday 30th April, leaving the corner of Centry Road and Gillard Road at 9 am. We will walk along the coast path to Berry Head (unless it is really wet underfoot, in which case we will choose the inland path!). We will gather at the Guardhouse Café for a coffee or for brunch - whichever you prefer on the day. We are walking with the women of the world to clelbrate the work of ACWW. Have a look at their website for more information.
