Sew Mondays Team!

Did you spot this in last month’s DFWI News? It is here again, to remind us! Shall we make something? Do you have any ideas? Please email me!
As I understand it, a single, top quality item is required. Do we go for something which would be quite expensive, like a quilt for example? Or should we focus on a lower priced, more widely appealing item; maybe even several of the same thing? The idea is for them to make some cash, I think!

Pen Pal, anyone?

This message is from Valerie Hughes, a WI member who Has set up something rather spectacular! Read on:
As new resolutions are being discussed again, I wonder if you could help me with my bid to with former resolutions to ease loneliness and alleviate mental health matters?
I set up a 'pen pal exchange' 5yrs ago which is working very well, but I constantly need to 'advertise" it to get new women interested in writing.
NFWI have details about it on mywi and WI Life have mentioned it several times.
I have emailed all the federations twice, some have been very helpful. I'm not sure if I don't hear from members of certain federations if they haven't advertised it or whether members in that area aren't interested.
Could you please spread the word.
It's a free service and complies with GDPR
Please message me for further details.

Thank you

Theatre trip today

Just had a fabulous afternoon at Palace Theatre. Thank you Lynn Asher for organising such an enjoyable trip.

Our Archives

At our last Institute meeting, Jayne asked if anyone has any memories of events they have shared with our late Queen Elizabeth II. Members were encouraged to write a short article about it for our archives, as a memory of this historic moment in our lives.

Here are some photos of a menu from Margaret Thomas, who was present at the Launch of  HMS Lancaster and attended the dinner in the presence of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip.

Today’s busy meeting!

Two people left their flowers today at the end of our meeting. Can Barbara remember who brought them? Or anyone else? The fuschia were in the vase, so I would like to return it!

What a great meeting, everyone!
(Although, I can still smell TCP đźĄ´)

A useful skill to learn on this Denman at Home session:

Claire’s Winter Warmers – Upcycling Woollens.

Friday, 21 October at 1:45pm
Save unwanted woollies from landfill, and save on your energy bills at the same time with these cosy and stylish upcycling projects!
We’re taking a sideways step from cotton fabric for this session and into the wonderful world of wool. Whether you have a jumper which has accidentally shrunk in the wash, or an old cardigan that has seen better days, there are lots of new things you can make from the wool.

Thursday 13 October 2022

Calling all knitters!

Can anyone help on this please.

ASK TORBAY
·
Since we have lost our much valued League of Friends, from the hospital, we are no longer able to source “twiggle mits” for our lovely dementia patients. I work in the recovery department at Torbay Hospital and am reaching out to anyone who would be able to knit/provide these for us please. Once our patients are stabilised, we take them back to the wards and the twiggle mits go with them. Please, if you know of anyone who would be willing to supply us with some, our patients would be very grateful. Thank you.

Pretty Paper Stars, anyone?

Does anyone remember making these paper stars? They were on the front of WI Life in 2018! Someone has just asked for the instructions on the UWI (Unofficial Women's Institute - UWI) Facebook group! Perhaps we could make them alongside the gorgeous gift bags at our November craft session - just in time for Christmas!

Book Worms and Book Share this week

We had a wonderful time at bookworms with lots discussed. Our book 'the last runaway' by Tracey Chevalier was enjoyed and made us think about slavery both then and now as well as quilting.
We also had a good chat about saving energy, air fryers and rechargeable sensor motion lights!
We have 3 spaces if anyone would like to join us. (Second Wednesday morning each month)

At Book Share a select group discussed the last book, Two Women in Rome by Elizabeth Buchan, which received mixed reviews.
Other authors discussed and enjoyed in the month were Sheila O'Flannagan, The Women who ran Away; Patrick Ness A Monster Calls; Lisa Jewell's books. Anthony Horowitz and Iain Banks were recommended and we have hopes for a good read this month. (Second Thursday afternoon each month)

On the reverse of that badge, please write the name and number of your next of kin or person you wish to be contacted in case of emergency. If there is any urgent medical information of which we should be aware, please include that, too. We hope  that we will never have to read the back of your badge!
#In November we have the Margaret Seaward Exhibition - a chance for you to bring an item you have created especially for this exhibition - photo, drawing, sewing, painting, poem, flower arrangement, baked item, crochet, modern dance.....whatever you can create! The theme is 'Gold'. Please enter!
#Devon Federation is emailing new members with a survey - please respond! It will help them to provide what we need!

#And finally..... when you arrive on Wednesday 19th,  Tina will hand you a ticket with your table name for the afternoon. We hope you will enjoy getting to know some different WI members this month!
