News from NFWI

Tomorrow is the start of #OvarianCancerAwarenessMonth! As part of our #SeeTheSigns campaign, we're raising awareness of the subtle signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, so all women know what to look out for.

You can help to raise awareness by downloading our campaign action pack and sharing the social media graphics from our website: https://www.thewi.org.uk/.../key-and.../see-the-signs
The four main symptoms of ovarian cancer are:
• Persistent stomach pain
• Difficulty eating/ feeling full more quickly
• Persistent bloating
• Needing to wee more frequently
The earlier ovarian cancer is diagnosed the easier it is to treat. However, because the early signs of ovarian cancer are similar to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), it is often not diagnosed until it has spread and a cure is not possible.
If you are experiencing one or more symptoms of ovarian cancer and they are persistent and increasingly frequent, or a change that isn’t normal for you, speak to your GP.

Day Four

An interesting day today for Brixham WI intrepid types! Two of us went swimming, and the pool was busy! We aren't used to that! We enjoyed it, anyway!

This afternoon’s word games went rather awry and instead we have founded the Thursday Afternoon Murder Club. Schemes laid, plans afoot, alibis all in place. Were there any witnesses to the conversation? 🧐🤫🤭 Next Club meeting is Thursday 24th March at 2pm.

Captain’s log, Day Three of our Very Busy Week:

Our walk yesterday was really enjoyable, around the harbour, Battery Gardens and down through the town for a very good cup of coffee!
Today’s shrinkable plastic workshop was, as always, magical! We spent some time creating an image on the plastic, choosing from a wide array of stamps before applying some heat! Therein lies the magic, and we ended up with some much smaller images! Thank you to Barbara and her team! I hope someone thought to take some photos!

50s Fashions, anyone?

50s fashions, anyone? Have you started looking for your outfit yet? This one was spotted (see what I did there! ) this morning at the bottom of Fore Street. #brixhamwifashionshow

Day one of our fully loaded week is done!

We are all still standing….well, most of us! Jean Bartlett😀
The walkers had a very enjoyable, if a little muddy, walk this morning and the Sew Mondays group made plans to create a lovely portable sewing kit, with lots of help from Ann W. We had a lot of chat and some sewing, too: more colourful hearts and a pin cushion.

New Year Meal

What a marvellous lunch and afternoon at the Livermead House Hotel! All organised for us by Mary C and her team of helpers! Everyone enjoyed the excellent company, lovely food, good service and very special surroundings.
Sadly, a few of us were not able to make it, so we will organise another meal for them very soon.

Thursday 17 February 2022

At our meeting yesterday I forgot to ask something important!

In connection with our 50th birthday celebrations Barbara and Mary C are going to put together a lovely display about Brixham WI. They need your help! Do you have any photos you could let them use? Will you write a short paragraph about your first Brixham WI meeting for them, please? Bring it to the next meeting or event! Thank you!

February’s Institute meeting

What a beautiful blanket, created by the craft afternoon members in September. Since then, Elly, Mary C and Barbara have been very busy sewing it all together. Beryl knitted all of the border, using wool donated to us by Margery! What a marvellous all round joint effort! Mary is going to give it to a local charity for the homeless.

We had a very interesting and informative talk about how to use the internet safely. We all learnt a lot! Also! If anyone has specific, individual IT queries, there is a service available at our library. It is possible to book some time with one of their IT buddies, who will be able to help.

Plans for workshops, events and our 50th birthday were discussed, as well as information about the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We are going to do another fashion show - 1950s this time!

Look at the side bar of this blog page, where you will see all of the dates for events which are already organised.

Everyone was given their 50 activities in our 50th year sheets to take away and fill in throughout the year! We are hoping that our members will enter into the spirit of the idea and join in - so that in December we can look back to see just how much we have all done together!

Wet and windy walk!

Ha ha! The joke is definitely on me! Billy no mates at the Man and Boy statue this morning! I enjoyed a very windswept and interesting walk anyway!

Sunday 13 February 2022

This week:

Brixham WI members! For your delight and enjoyment this week, we have:

Monday: meet at the bus station to catch the 10.30 bus for a walk
Tuesday: Man and Boy 10.30 Brixham walk
Wednesday: Institute meeting
Thursday: meet at the Admiral Pool at 8.30 for a swim.
Friday: New Year meal: meet at noon

Saturday 12 February 2022

Food for thought….

We have more and more interest in our WI, which is fantastic!

Our members will know that in April we will have a vacancy for President.
Do you have differing ideas on how we could run our Institute? Instead of just talking between yourselves: why don‘t they do this? Why have they done that? - join the committee and put your ideas where they can have a positive effect! Make a forward move yourself to help us do the best we can for our members.

A Busy Week!

We have enjoyed a possible 6 activities for Brixham WI members this week! Having made 5 of them I would like to say what interesting, fun and fabulous women you are! Thank you for your excellent company! Next week is looking pretty good, too!

Do you see how I am encouraging the wild beasts in my garden - to eat their way through all the primrose petals and many other leaves?
