Opportunity for an afternoon tea, anyone?

NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day
The WI is proud to be supporting the first-ever NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day on 5 July 2021, to thank health and care workers for being there for us when we need them most. We are particularly so proud of the many incredible WI members who are also NHS staff and frontline workers, our WI heroes, who throughout the pandemic have shown such strength and resilience by bravely stepping forward to support others.
We would love to see WI members across the country organise special Afternoon Tea events within their communities to mark the NHS and Frontline Workers Day, and we encourage as many others as possible to get involved too. Find out more on the NHS Frontline Day's website: https://www.nhsfrontlineday.org/
The WI has created a unique celebration cake, which can be made by people of all ages from all backgrounds, all across the country, and be shared together at the same time on this special day. We hope this will be an opportunity for communities, families, and friends to come together in whatever way possible, to truly celebrate our remarkable NHS and frontline workers. This magnificent cake has been designed by Kelly Mauger, Pastry Chef and Denman Tutor.

Today’s zoom

We had quite a quirky quiz today, which had everyone really wracking the brains! It was fun, if not very high scoring! Then we had some really interesting information about collections, and various items people have carefully kept in their family, hoping to pass them on.

Poetry Rocks!

It looks as if we could do something here, walkers...

 TORBAY COUNCIL - NEWS RELEASE

Have your say on dog fouling and alcohol restriction zones in Torbay
I have copied the sections relevant to ‘dog fouling’ from a post by Torbay Council on Facebook. Please can you fill in the consultation as mentioned below.

Torbay Council would like to hear the views of their residents on the proposals to extend the Public Space Protection Orders for dog fouling and amending the orders for drinking alcohol in the streets of town centres.
A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is a positive way to help prevent anti-social behaviour. It can provide an effective response to some of the issues that residents and businesses face on a daily basis.
The PSPO for dog fouling will cover the whole of Torbay and will mean that someone could receive a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of up to £100 if they fail to pick up after their dog immediately after they have fouled on public land.
Being a responsible dog owner means having sight of their dog at all times, being aware of what it is doing and always carrying enough poo bags to be able to pick up after the dog, as many times as is necessary. Forgetting to take bags is not an excuse and if bags are forgotten on a dog walk and the owner is then unable to pick up after their dog, the owner will be in breach of the PSPO and may receive an FPN.
This PSPO for dog fouling will apply to all land and places the public has access to within the Torbay Council area, for example roads, pavements, public footpaths, alleyways, grass verges, beaches and parks including woodland. It will also apply to all areas of land or woodland managed by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust.
The consultation on these two PSPO’s is now open and will close on Wednesday 25 March 2021. More information on the orders, to see the maps for the Alcohol Restriction Zones and to complete the consultations visit: https://www.torbay.gov.uk/.../public-space-protection.../

Today’s zoom!

We had an entertaining meeting today at Zoom, with a great quiz from Sparks.  Some people got almost all the questions right.

Thanks to Hilary Bligh who suggested we all give a thumbnail sketch of our lives and it was very interesting learning about each other's backgrounds.   So many of us had something in common: living in same areas, fathers with similar occupations necessitating moves round the UK or world, holiday romances and similar occupations ourselves.

Don’t forget to email enquiries@dfwi.org.uk to book your place at the Canine Partners zoom on 26th Feb at 2pm. Email your name, your WI and your email address &telephone number.

More creative crafting going on...

 Wonderful, Barbara!

#ShowTheLove zoom!

We had a great meeting today, 20 people came along and we taxed our brains with Tina’s quiz! Thank you! Thank you also to all the people who told a story! Very interesting and entertaining!

We have decided to write to Brixham Town council and the Countryside Trust to ask them to put a dog waste bin - or bins - along the footpath from Gillard and Centry Road towards Berry Head. We will write as individuals and as Brixham WI. Also send the green heart postcards to our MP to alert him to the issue as well.

Great work, Ann P for making some felt greenhearts to display around the footpaths and town! Fab! Let’s do more of it!

Maybe just do some planning to #ShowTheLove instead!

More crafting going on....

.....do you have any photos to share?

Here are two metre square quilts I made to send to NHAP, a charity which sends hand made items to hospitals, care homes, nurseries, homeless centres.

Lots of WIs across the country are #Showing the Love!

February Working Together But Apart: Are you joining in?

I thought it would be a simple thing to pick up litter whilst taking my dog on loan for a walk! No! He did not want to stop where the litter was....everywhere else but there! Clearly a dog of good taste! Anyway, I managed to fill a carrier bag from Lower Rea Road, Centry, Gillard and just by the Rugby Club. Missed lots, so will go round again! #showthelove

Is anyone else getting involved In this working together but apart February project?

#Show the Love

February is the month when the WI supports the #ShowtheLove campaign which highlights the need for us to look after our environment. Green hearts are made and shared to encourage people to be more aware and take more care of where they live and the places they love.

Our working together but apart February is to make some green hearts! Below are some heart crochet patterns; here are my scraps of fabric being sewn together to make some hearts! Maybe you prefer to knit? Or paint green hearts on shells or pebbles? Or make some card or paper hearts?

February’s first zoom!

We had another fab zoom today! It was great to see Yvonne Deane, who has only just learned how to zoom - she did get it all working, even though not in this picture! Thank you to Jayne Stone and her Mum Margaret for their taxing but excellent quiz! Next week is going to be a ‘Would I lie to you?’ session! start preparing your stories! Tina Hemmings has kindly offered to do a quiz, too.

Could this be something we are interested in doing together but apart? 🤔

Can I heartily recommend you to watch Craftivism on BBC 4, presented by Jenny Eclair? https://www.bbc.co.uk/.../craftivism-making-a-difference

Bearing in mind that this is the time when the WI is focussed on the Show the Love campaign, making green hearts....

Something funny and something of interest!

This is for all of the folk who are missing out on the fun and the warm community that is FaceBook!

These two were published by NHS in Scotland, aimed at helping children to deal with stress and anxiety. I think we all come into the category of children, in this case, and can find some good ideas here.
