Book Share - from Jayne

Bookshare met at the golf club today. Most people enjoyed Louis and Louise, which led to a discussion on modern times, differences(or not) on the lives of girls v boys and how events impact them. The new book is A More Perfect Union by Tammye Huf and next month’s bookshare will be Friday 3rd January 2025.

So many books recommended at bookshare today.

Apples Never Fall and A Husband’s Secret (Liane Moriarty) - recently on TV; who done it books by Felix Francis (Dick Francis’ son); Rough Music (Patrick Gale) a family saga; Mystery books by Louise Penny, whose latest book is The Grey Wolf; Midnight in Blue a Rebus book by Ian Rankin; the Figurine and One August Night, a follow up to the Island (Victoria Hislop); If no one speaks of Remarkable Things - an unusual book based on a street (Jon McGregor); A Christmas Carol, Hard Times and Little Dorrit (Charles Dickens); The Space Between Us (Doug Johnstone); Dry Hard- a laugh out loud book (Nick Spalding); Frank and Red (Matt Coyne); Demon Copperhead (based on the story of David Copperfield) (Barbara Kingsolver); the Dry by Jane Harper; The Whalebone Theatre - highly recommended (Joanna Quinn); the Fellowship of Puzzlemakers (Samuel Burr); Gilead (Marilynne Robinson).

Pewter workshop

We had a brilliant afternoon, hardly had a moment to speak or even breathe sometimes! There was a lot to do and the results were absolutely superb! I haven’t taken photos of all of the frames, so please will you add yours if it isn‘t here?

Thank you to Pat for showing us the one she made ages ago, which inspired us to do it. Thank you Sheila for organising, and to Jenny and Kate who were able to step in at the last minute when some couldn‘t make it. We hope you all feel better very soon. Our tutor, Jackie Bufton did a great job. (She must have been shattered!)

Pewter workshop

 Pewter workshop people!

Our tutor Jackie has not given a list of anything to bring - so maybe an apron if you are a mucky worker! You might want to bring a drink as we may not have time for a tea break.
Wasn’t this one clever? I loved it!

It’s Reverse Advent Calendar time again!
Grab a box - decorate it if you wish! - then each day for 24 days follow our guide to collect food and hygiene products.
All items will go straight into our food bank and Christmas hampers which we provide to locally supported families. You can choose to start now, or wait till the first of December; it’s a great way to start feeling festive and give back to the community!
When you’ve finished, pop it along to us at The Edge on Bolton Street, thank you! 🎄🎄

Well done! Jacqui H, Wendy Mac and Aldene!

Many of us were very impressed and touched by the work of Yes!Brixham:

Can you help?
As a small charity, we thought it would be interesting to let people see some of the regular payments we have to make to keep things running smoothly here at The Edge!
- It costs around £166 a month to keep our mini bus running – without this, we wouldn’t be able to make collections and deliveries for our shop nor use it for transporting our young volunteers to the community garden, allotment and local beaches to clean in the Summer.
- Our hot water and heating all run on a wood-fired burner. Each load of specially kiln dried logs costs us £480 a time.
- On average, it costs us £300 a month for all our printing and photocopying costs, which is a vital part of our support work when we help people with benefit forms.
- Last year, our Grotto cost us around £3100 to run for the community. As many know, our Grotto is free and we rely on donations (monetary, item based and labour time!) to keep it going every year.
- On average we pay £22 a week to run our washing machine and tumble dryer, which those without a fixed address or washing facilities are able to use.
- Our food bank costs us around £87 a week to stock up on important and essential items to provide the people of Brixham a range of meals.
- We pay around £38 a month to keep our fridges and freezers running – helping us provide fresh food and frozen items to those accessing our food bank and community fridge.
- It costs us around £3.80 a week, boiling the kettle, for all the cups of tea and coffee we make in our community cafe, music sessions, activities and whilst supporting people.
Over the last year we have seen, spoken to or had other contact with over 13,376 people and we are proud to continue to help those in our community.
If you feel you would like to support the charity, please get in touch with us on 01803851414 or email info@yesbrixham.org.uk. We appreciate every single person who helps keep the charity going, from donations and voluntary time to buying items in our charity shop. Thank you!

Bookworms report from Rebecca

Bookworms met on Wednesday to discuss our book. There was not much book discussion as all but a couple of us didn’t finish it. It was not our cup of tea! The book in question was “A long night in Paris” by Dov Alfon.

We did have a lovely hour though catching up.
Our next book is “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”.

Readers, something for you!

For all book lovers, at a loss for the next good read:

Corporal Carrot Quotes
Have - have you got an appointment?' he said.
'I don't know,' said Carrot. 'Have we got an appointment?'
'I've got an iron ball with spikes on,' Nobby volunteered.
'That's a morningstar, Nobby.'
'Is it?'
'Yes,' said Carrot. 'An appointment is an engagement to see someone, while a morningstar is a large lump of metal used for viciously crushing skulls. It is important not to confuse the two, isn't it, Mr-?' He raised his eyebrows.
'Boffo, sir. But-'
'So if you could perhaps run along and tell Dr Whiteface we're here with an iron ball with spi- What am I saying? I mean, without an appointment to see him? Please? Thank you.
