It was a wonderfully creative afternoon making Virginia's Draw string bags, today.

Thanks to Virgina for the idea, patterns etc, the experts with cutting wheels and sewing machines from Sew Mondays and everyone else for having a go!

 Here are the results of our efforts at this afternoon’s workshop. Aren’t they gorgeous? I’m sure Esme and Patrick would have been most impressed.

A big thank you to Jenny and all of the furniture shifters, a big thank you to Loz (no plasters were used in the making of these bags!) and to all of the Sew Mondays team. As mentioned in Lynn’s post below, biggest thanks of all to Virginia for having the idea and setting us all going!

Gift Bag preparations!

 Today, the members of Sew Mondays have been planning and preparing for our Wednesday workshop, making Virginia’s gift bags.

We have come up with some points for you to consider:

Some of you might prefer to use your own fabric and arrive with it already cut out. You will need two rectangles, 10” x 7” to make the outside of your bag and two rectangles of exactly the same size for your lining. For the cord tunnel, two rectangles 2” x 9.5”.

If you prefer not to do this, we will have plenty of fabric, cutting tools and patterns for you to do it on the day!

Our general consensus was that there may not be time for a tea break, so please feel free to bring your own drink if you will need one! Our aim is for everyone to go home with a finished gift bag!

 Here are the craft afternoon details: (I just realised that some don’t look at emails! So, attempting to cover all options here!)

Virginia’s Gift Bag workshop - £5

Wednesday 30th October 2 until 4pm Rugby Club

All levels of sewing experience welcome!

There will be lots of help on hand!

We will provide:

Fabric, draw string, threads.

Instructions and help if required

Patterns, a cutting wheel and a cutting board

You can bring:

your own fabric and threads if you prefer (one fat quarter will make two bags)

Your own sewing machine

Scissors, pins and needles

Or, use the kit we provide on the day!

This can be made using a sewing machine or sewn by hand. If you wish to sew by machine, then please bring your own to use.
You can make it entirely by yourself,
or you can ask someone to do the machine sewing for you.

What’s On?

I’m hoping to get this right first time! It’s half term week, and we have a pretty full-on diary ahead of us!

Monday: 2pm Sew Mondays. Please let Jill Haslam know you are coming. A small, perfectly formed and very friendly group, open to anyone!

Wednesday: 2pm Craft Afternoon at the Rugby Club. £5. We are making Virginia’s fabric gift bag! I shall email everyone soon with details so you know what to bring and what to expect. If you would like to come and your name isn’t on our list, please let me know immediately!

 Today’s bookshare welcomed a new member. We then discussed The Lullaby by Leila Slimani

Mostly enjoyed in varying levels.

The month’s bookshare book is The Two Lives of Louis and Louise.

Bookshare recommendations today covered a variety of genres: Gabriel’s Moon (William Boyd), Death at the sign of the Rook (Kate Atkinson), I am Pilgrim (Terry Hayes), The Day of th3 Lochst (Nathaneal West), the latest Strike novel (Robert Galbraith), the Hardacres (CL Skelton- the book is a bit different to the current TV series), thevWonsn who Lied (Claire Douglas), The Lost Bookshop (Evie Woods), My Favourite Mistake (Marion Keyes), Someone Else’s Shoes (Jojo Moyes), The Kilt Trip (Alexandra Kiley), The Scottish Ladies Detective Agency (Lydia Travers). A dog training manual.

 What is happening this week?

There is a particularly good film at Brixham theatre on Wednesday 23rd, in case anyone is interested in an entertaining night out! We haven’t organised anything, so this would be a DIY event!

We would usually have our craft afternoon, but as you know, that has been moved forward a week to 30th October instead.

Sew Mondays is also next week, 28th, so this is advance notice to those interested!

Thursday is Book Share at 2pm at the Golf Club this week!

Monday dog walk - from Tina

Fun dog walk today. No fighting, no barking and no running away. And the dogs were good too.

 What is happening this week?

Monday: 2pm meet at Broadsands car park for a walk on the beach or along the prom (tiddley om pom pom) with your dogs! All welcome, with or without dogs!

Wednesday: 2pm Institute meeting at the Cricket Club. All the details are in Lynn’s recent email.

On the change to the WI bylaws, 

"The proposal is that we increase membership to 66 from April 2025, to accommodate membership for the women who have been on the waiting list for several months even years."

Goosey Fair

 A grand day out at Tavistock Goosey Fair was had yesterday. We all got lost amongst the various stalls (and some of us even before we set off!)

Lovely company, and good fun. Thank you Lynn Asher for organising it.

 As it is World Mental Health Day today, here is a lovely post from Simon’s Cat on Instagram. If you love cat cartoons, you will find his posts very entertaining indeed!

 The cribbage session was well attended, and not nearly as serious as the photos show. And SOMEBODY, despite being an absolute beginner, won every game!

Monthly coffee morning in the sun!

We had a really entertaining morning today at Lupton House café. Great coffee, scintillating company and loads of laughter! So many topics covered! Bonus - we sat outside in the sun!
