A report from Tina after today’s walk.

Brixham WI on Tour. Otherwise known as Billy-no-mates goes for a walk.

The Wednesday walk was epic today.
A lovely day for a walk, beautifully windy and lots to look at. However, the breakwater was not so inviting, so I took solace in a hot choc in Breakwater Bistro.

Brixham WI - the future!

What a brilliant first institute meeting of our new year! Welcome to all of our new members and to all of our members who have renewed their membership.

Thank you to Mary H for her wonderful programme booklet - be sure to keep it at hand so that you have all of the information right there!
We can look forward to some new faces, with new energy, enthusiasm and ideas to join our committee next month! How fabulous to see Brixham WI moving forward yet again! We have a number of past presidents in our mix: Barbara L, Mary C, Sparks, Jayne S and Lynn - each one of whom has played their part in enabling Brixham WI to move forward - and we are all very happy indeed to step back and let others take us forward. Ready to lend a hand if asked, of course!
Hooray for Brixham WI and here’s to our rosy future!

Life on the Edge Art Display comes to Brixham Library

We saw this work in Totnes when ours was on display there, too. These pieces created by the students are absolutely stunning and well worth a visit. Especially as it has now come to us, right on our doorstep!

This looks interesting!

Have you tried the free Brixham Maritime Heritage Trail?

A new free Maritime Heritage Trail has been launched in Brixham to celebrate the centenary of Vigilance of Brixham.
The self guided trail takes visitors on a journey around Brixham Harbour, uncovering centuries of local history— from notorious smugglers and Dutch invaders to the D-Day landings and the town’s vital role in the deep-sea fishing industry.
The route begins at Brixham Heritage Museum and finishes at Vigilance of Brixham, moored on the Heritage Pontoon opposite the The Prince William, Brixham pub.
The free trail guide, designed by Sam Cork of Brixham, is available from Brixham town hall, Brixham library, Brixham Heritage Museum, and participating cafés, pubs and shops along the route.
If you’ve done the trail we’d love to hear about it… drop us a message on here and let us know what you thought! Did you learn anything new?

Book Share evolves!

We held our final old style Book Share this afternoon with a lovely coffee/cold drink at the Golf Club.

Ironically, we all really enjoyed the final book offered to us from our library subscription! We enjoyed a good discussion about the characters and the plot - in much greater depth than any other post book discussion I can recall! Many thanks to Jayne for organising it all, as well as doing the majority of the heavy lifting involved.
Books recommended for members to read this month are: Amor Towles’ ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’, Tracey Chevalier’s The Glass Maker and Kate Moreton’s The Forgotten Garden. One suggestion which was not taken up by anyone was about a dog in wartime - we decided it would be a ‘weepy’ and no-one could face it!
Next month, Thursday 7th May, we will discuss some or all of these titles.
Please feel free to come along and join in, all welcome, no pressure!

Membership!

Brixham WI has had a great response to our invitation to interested women who wish to join us. We are however, nearing capacity and as such we will be closing our "expressions of interest" book, as we feel it will be unfair to allow ladies to get their hopes up when we cannot offer them visits with a further offer of joining.  (We will continue our contact and potential meeting visits to those women who have already had an email exchange with Tina Hemmings, which initially started through them contacting us at brixham@devonwi.org .)

If subsequent spaces arise, we will let you all know via these social media areas.

Thank you.  Brixham Committee.

Any ABBA fans?

Or, to everyone who enjoys a good night out!

This comes to us from Jacquie Humber, the secretary at New Marldon WI:-

Please can you let your members know about the attached event.  We had the same band back in October and it was a great success, we are hoping that this one will be too!

Plan your week ahead!

Walk off all of the Easter indulgence with us on Tuesday! Non threatening, flat walk along the harbour and breakwater. You could even meet us by the slipway at the end of the breakwater if you prefer! We’ll be leaving the Man & Boy statue promptly at 11. Ending up with a coffee, of course!

April Craft Event!

On Tuesday 21st April, Barbara will show how to make these very pretty kusudama flowers - beautiful results and very straightforward to make, following her instructions.

Brixham rugby club 2 - 4 pm £4. There may be an additional cost for materials, payable to Barbara on the day, cash.
Please pay in advance - by our next Institute meeting on 15th April. Thank you very much!
Make a bunch of flowers for yourself! Excellent for those who suffer from hay fever!

A good moment to participate?

 Things you can do:

  • Download or order posters, stickers, postcards - and use them in activities with your WIs meetings, drop-ins and events you’re already planning (you can get all the campaign resources here).
  • Spell out the word 'Hope' - take a photo and share it with us. You can tag @1mactsofhope on most social media, and use the hashtag #MillionActsOfHope. Do tag the NFWI too :)
  • Create a ‘hope wall’ - with messages from your community on what they hope for locally or what gives them hope.
You could also host a 'Hopeful event'. There are lots of tips on how to do this on the campaign web page:
  • Share a cup of tea with your neighbour - arrange to talk to someone you might not have spoken to before.
  • Host a nature walk or litter pick - celebrate the natural beauty of your area and encourage people to get outside.
  • Create a swap shop for local people to bring and share food together or donate and swap items with others.
  • Celebrate volunteers - run a thank you event.
  • Host a ‘Hope Happens Here’ event; run a street party or event in your local park centred on hope, fun, and celebrating where you live.
There are lots of resources in the campaign's Community Hub, which you find here: https://millionactsofhope.org/community-hub, and you can let the team know what you're planning - and order resources - here.

Enjoy spreading hope!

A message from the Life on the Edge team

Today, our conservation team found three black oil beetles in your WI meadow at Coleton Fishacre. See photos. This is a great sign that the meadow has taken well and is already providing habitat or forage for at least one of our special species. Thank you.

Brixham WI on tour again!

A lovely walk, followed by a drink at Fishcombe Cove cafe this morning. A good blow of fresh air and some lovely conversation. Thank you ladies for your company. You can see how windswept and interesting we are!

Thank you to Tina for the photo, and for letting us know that today is National Walk in the Park day!
