From our last Institute meeting:

Notes from our speaker, Tom Sharples:

VEGETABLES
Basil Midnight - a bronze leaved trailing type for growing on it's own or with flowers in containers
Runner/French Bean crosses which can self pollinate if bees are not flying. Moonlight (white flowered), Firestorm (red flowered), Jackpot (Dwarf mixed flower colours for containers)
Tomatoes - Blight resistant types e.g Crimson Crush (standard size), Crimson Cocktail (cherry-type)
Aubergine F1 Scorpio - grafted type - very productive cropper
FLOWERS
Begonia Non-Stop mix, Impatiens Divine mix, French Marigold Zenith and Petunia Tidal Wave - these were examples of new breeding resulting in what are known as 'Mule' hybrids
'Mule' types do not set seed, but endeavour to do so right through the first frosts. Thus they are constantly producing new flowers to cover the fading ones. So no need to do all that 'dead-heading!
